    At one point, it sounded as if the DNR had written a geocaching policy & it was “in the mail” for all of us to behold.

    There was also talk of WGA and DNR members getting together to produce a training video for parks workers and/or land managers;

    In talking to a DNR representative recently, she told me there was some discussion had in reference to geocaching, but no policy, as of yet.

    What ever happened?

    It was also made clear that budget cuts have cut staffing down to minimal in all state parks. I was at Bong last weekend & there was not even anyone working the gate, which has traditionally been staffed 7 days a week till 11 p.m. Anyone else seeing the results of the state budget affecting parks?

    Back in August 2003, I was contacted by the powers to be at the DNR, so they could get my mailing address. They said they would be mailing out the policy.

    After several weeks of checking my mail and not finding it, I called the lady back. She said someone else was in charge of the policy and they still have my address. I tried sending emails with no response.

    I guess the bottom line is they have the policy, they need to get it to me so we can publish it, and start enforcing it during the approval process.

    I haven’t been a witness to the budget crunch, other then Bong only had 1/2 the amount of pheasants to release this year. The release season was shortened by a month because of the budget crunches.

    At the city I work for, squad cars are carrying a pail of salt in the truck because public works won’t come out and salt dangerous areas. Seems public works is hit by the budget crunch too. Maybe we will get rid of the pail and get salter units for the back of our squads

    Regarding the video, we did quite a bit of preparation work and had a DNR park manager in mind to give us an on-camera testimonial about geocaching. We had WGA members lined up to be our on-camera participants to place and find caches. We also had a another WGA member who works in the video business prepared to help us do the shooting and editing. However, at nearly the last minute the DNR informed us that they could not allow their employee to participate until they knew what the official state policy towards geocaching was going to be. Somewhere along the line this policy is being held from public release, so it has affected several WGA initiatives.
