Eh.. I’m 16 years old, new to caching, and I only heard of it since the FOX 6 segment a couple nights ago. I’m thinking of paying for a GPSr, and hoping my mom can come with me so we can both try it out.. However, my mom doesn’t really seem interested. I don’t really know what I should do, because my mom’s the kind of person that doesn’t trust a whole lot of (or any) people on the internet. What would you guys suggest I do?
05/06/2003 at 10:34 pm #1750204Guess what?………I don’t trust a whole lot of people on the internet either, so your Mom already has something in common…… I would try to find someone in your area with a GPS. Many hunters have them, so if you know anyone that hunts, ask them if you could borrow it. That would at least give you an idea whether you’ll like it. What am I saying?!! You’re gonna love it!! If your Mom likes to get out onto the trails every now and then, or go for walks, then geocaching is something she’d really enjoy. Here’s some promotional ideas you could use………
1. It’s a great opportunity to spend quality time together.
2. It’s a great exercise routine that doesn’t cost much and is actually pleasant to do.
3. It gets you outside and away from the TV.I’m clear over here on the western side of WI, or I would take you guys out myself…..
If you have a drivers license, you can go with a friend of yours……..Good luck!!
05/06/2003 at 10:54 pm #1750205There are cacher’s in your area. I am not far away either. I would not want my kids to hook up with someone off the internet, but there are things you can do. Trudy and the beast have discussed having breakfast meetings on Saturday mornings over at Heinemans on Brown Deer. (Not too far) This would give your mom a chance to meet some of the cachers and you might be able to tag along on a caching trip.
05/06/2003 at 10:55 pm #1750206Feel free to email me and we can set something up also. I am in the Falls, but know your area well.
05/06/2003 at 11:02 pm #1750207Johnson’s: Thanks, but I’ve done some research on geocaching (mostly from fellow cachers :P)so I already tried those reasons..
Priebe’s: Thanks for the info, I’ll try contacting them to see if I can hop in on a meeting sometime.
05/07/2003 at 12:48 am #1750208Star_Wolf and mom, I think anyone that likes the outdoors will like geocaching. While the hunting down of the cache is the objective, or destination, it is the journey that is the real pleasure for most. The walk in a park or in the woods or on a trail. It’s the time spent with the family or a friend, with a pet or by one’s self. It’s a little of the high tech world. It’s a lot of back to nature. It’s 16 year olds wanting to get out and explore. It’s retired kids looking to pick up where they left off so many years ago. It’s making new friends and looking forward to happening upon them from time to time on the trails. It about getting as involved as you want or not geting involved at all. All it costs is as little as $100 for a simple GPS and a means to travel to the cache sites. And, an inquisitive mind to always wonder what the next adventure will bring.

Set some time aside this Sunday, Trudy & I will show you and your mom a few caches locally placed that you can get started on. Don’t buy the GPS yet. Wait until you and your mom have an opportunity to see how the whole game fits together. Then you will be in a better position to make a decision on what features are important to you and how much you will want to invest.
The other contributors to this thread provide very valuable insight and I personally have great respect for their contributions. Let me know what time You would like to meet on Sunday. We’ll set up a starting location and brief itinerary. Or put together a brief list of caches you think you might like to visit.05/07/2003 at 7:58 pm #1750210Alright.. Should I contact you by e-mail or on this board? I’m thinking at around 2 pm on Sunday..

05/08/2003 at 12:05 am #17502124102 Bradley is the right address for Sammy’s, we checked in the phonebook. Anyway, I can’t wait. All week I’ve been hoping to get involved with this, so I’m really excited now.
05/08/2003 at 3:47 pm #1750213I knew that, I was just checking to see if you were paying attention
Actually the beast has fat fingers, myopia and dyslexia. It’s amazing that I can communicate at all.
05/08/2003 at 8:39 pm #1750214hehe.. I can’t waiiiit.. hurry up Sunday! And no rain.. My mom’s the kind that hates to be in the rain, I’ll have to change her. 😛
05/09/2003 at 2:50 am #1750215Hey Beast, have you thought about contacting PK? She could use a beginning session…
I am planning (hopefully) on spending Mother’s day caching. Gee, I hope the kids do too…

05/09/2003 at 11:08 am #1750216Naturally, my mom’s got questions to ask on Sunday.. She really doesn’t want to go out in the rain, so I hope we don’t ruin your plans by not going out.. I’d feel bad if we went out without her, but she wouldn’t let me go out caching with people I don’t know. Anyway, we’ll likely only be able to talk about it if it’s raining. She may tolerate drizzle, but not pouring.. Depends on how the conditions are, likely the decision will have to be made at Sammy’s.
05/09/2003 at 9:32 pm #1750217As long as it’s not an interrogation, questions are fine. Bring a notebook, we can give you enough to write a small essay.
