Hi,
Wanted to know if someone could help me.
Every year me and a group of friends camp at Red Oak Campground in Baraboo. Our outing is always the weekend after Father’s Day.
The group has slowly collected GPS units over the year’s so this year I’m planning on making our own personalized geocache hunt for the trip.
I was planning on finding 6 good places within the campground for the hunt, but since I only get there a few hours before everyone else, that wouldn’t give me much time to find good spots.
So:
#1 – Would anyone be interested in doing some research for me? I’d recriprocate somehow. Some Culver’s gift certificates perhaps? Keep in mind that all participants … less myself would be pretty new to this, so simple is good.
and/or
#2 – If the geocaches were made permanent, I’d need someone to “maintain” them since I live near Chicago. I’m not sure if non-state campgrounds can hold geocaches long term, so any input is helpful.

I’m sure someone closer will respond soon, but I’ve got a few thoughts here.
This is a great idea! I’ve been doing this for the past two years at our annual Labor Day Campout at Devil’s River in Maribel. My focus has been for my kids and my cousins, a total of nine of them. I will always go out as the sun rises on Saturday morning (note: I am not a morning person, but this is always worth getting up for). I’ve placed around 15 caches each year.
One year I bought a bunch of cool toys on clearance and just camo painted the packaging, hiding the toys themselves. Last year I borrowed the method we use at our WGA sponsored events, Stamps!
The advantage I have is I only use one GPSr, so there isn’t a lot of worry about entering coordinates or paperwork, which I could see might be an issue with several GPSr’s. Instead of entering them by hand, a laptop could help. If you want paperwork, a nearby geocacher could help out with that as well.
Just a couple of thoughts, as I know how exciting it is! Thanks for posting!

Sorry to be a bit off-topic, but I just wanted to make sure you realize that you will be right next to some of the best hiking and caching in all of Wisconsin- Devil’s Lake State Park. If you have not experienced it, it has the greatest trails and overlooks that I have ever seen. A “must do” for visitors to the area!
Oh yeah … Devil’s Lake has always been a staple of our yearly outing. In fact our second year we actually camped there. But as with most state parks we are don’t have a secluded and LARGE group space we have found on Red Oak.
I’ve climbed what we call “The Death March” more than my share of times.
Of course we would pursue geocaches there as well, but I’m trying a personalized approach within Red Oak first … to get their interest!

I was a seasonal camper for 10 years at Devil’s River until just last year! We just started caching and of course never knew that you had that going on there. I think of all the spots that we know there, the waterfall, the various buildings and I can imagine how many wonderful hiding places there are to hide goodies. Are your events only for family or???? We would consider going back up there since we still have friends who are seasonals there and join in the fun if it is open to other geocachers.
