For me, one of the highlights of camping has always been the food!

I was mistakenly under the impression that the WGA would be hosting a couple of the meals along with a potluck. Maybe a potluck is something others want to discuss as a possibility?

Not having been involved in a group camp before, I am wondering what kind of a layout to expect for Tents, Grills, open fire pits, eating/shelter areas etc?

Hopefully one of you who has been to the site can clue us in on what to expect.

Ken and I visited the group sites, and they are awesome! We have two sites reserved (3&4), which are attached together. There is an imaginary line dividing the two sites. We have our own driveway with a parking lot going to our sites. There is a nicer pit toilet nearby. We are completely secluded from the other group sites in the area.

The sites share a very large, level, grass field in the middle. On the outside edges, there are wooded areas to set up your tents. Site 4 has room for approx 10 tents in the woods. Site 3 has wooded spots also, but they are somewhat on an incline. Each site has several picnic tables and fire rings. We are not going to have a problem getting 100 people in tents, but the parking is going to be our challenge. We have room for approx 20 vehicles.

Campers should bring their own food and cooking gear. There has been some discussion about the possibility of hosting a pancake breakfast Sunday. Would anyone be interested in that?

When you arrive on Friday, you will register at the base tent. After that you can set up your tents. We will have some sort of guidelines where to put the tents, so they are set up in an orderly fashion.

There are NOT any grills at the group camp sites. You will need to bring your own stove or grill. There is not any sort of shelter at the group sites. They are open fields/wooded sites. Each site has a designated fire ring. No electricity at the group sites, but we will have an DC/AC inverter so we can run computers and recharge batteries.

Saturday will be the main caching event. We will have grills fired up at the shelter/base. Bring your own food to cook for lunch on Saturday. Also bring your own plates, forks, napkins, etc. We have an indoor shelter reserved for Saturday. The shelter is surrounded by a beautiful grove of pine trees. There is a large grill outside the shelter, and about 20 individual grills scattered around the picnicing area. There is a fireplace inside the shelter, so if it’s cold or rainy, we can stoke up the fire.

We will probably be having evening caching events Friday, and Night caching on Saturday. If you’ve been to past campouts, you know the night caching is the best part of the weekend (in my opinion).

Sunday, is time to break camp, and recover the caches that have been placed for the event. Possibility of pancake breakfast Sunday.

It may be a little tough to host a potluck dinner on any day besides the actual caching event on Saturday.

I’ll try to post some picture of the sites sometime this weekend

I dug up this topic from Feb. and thought it might be good to bump it up to the top. Brians stated some useful information about the campout.

And just to be clear, there will be a pancake breakfast Sunday morning. See this forum topic to sign up: http://www.wi-geocaching.com/forums/Forum16/HTML/000021.html

I’m going to have to be a late arrival unfortunately and won’t be rolling in until Saturday evening. Is there going to be some designated spots set aside for tents for those who’ll miss the main check in?

Also, I saw that the temporary caches will be collected on Sunday. Will they be left out for a little while so that are available to be found on Sunday?

Lastly, since I’m unfamiliar with the park and it’s setup, would it be advisable to bring bikes to use in conjunction with caching?

Sorry for all the last minute questions, this one sort of snuck up on me.

There will be room for you to set up. You just won’t have first choice of tent sites obviuosly.

The caches will be recovered Sunday morning. After the 5pm meeting concludes on Saturday, you are welcome to keep looking for caches. You can also help recover caches Sunday morning. Don’t forget about the pancake breakfast. We will assign people to recover caches to make sure they all get returned. If there is a cache on your “to do” list, you can volunteer to recover that one.

Bikes will be very nice for getting around. Especially if you need to shuttle to an overflow parking lot. They have some nice bike trails in the park. Some of which require a state bike trail pass.

We have one of the family sites reserved for the weekend. Most of them have parking for two vehicles. If someone wants to sneek in the “driveway” before us they’re welcome to. We can work something out for leaving keys in the event the first vehicle wants to get out.. I believe we are site 28..

Just a thought… Yes, it’s a little walk but, better than some other alternatives..
