Anyone planning on camping before and/or after this event? If so, where? I’m only about an hour away from this, but would really like to have a reason to camp again (since I had a really great time in May!) And, being a girl camping alone, it’s always nice to know some folks nearby at the same campground.
And I have a pretty small tent, so I would be willing to share a campsite too.

07/16/2004 at 2:24 am #1758184I’m thinking of taking off work and camping Friday night- otherwise we may have a difficult time making it to the picnic on time. I don’t know the area really, but was looking at Sky High Camping Resort ust cause they seem to be one of the closer ones (with a website anyway….). It’s in Portage- not sure how close that really actually is, but it’s gotta be closer than Appleton! It says $13/adult so pretty reasonable.
Anyone in the area know of any campgrounds that may be better/closer?
07/16/2004 at 3:37 am #1758185Although I’ve never camped at Sky High, I have been there and it’s a nice campground with a view from the top of Cascade Mountain. I think you’ll enjoy staying there.
07/17/2004 at 4:54 am #1758186A group of Iowa Cachers will be camping at the KOA just north of Madison, on fri & sat nights. Unless there is a better recommendation for us we can still change our reservation.
We would like to do some caching besides just the picnic.
What are some must do’s in the area?
Are there any Night Caches close by?
See you soon

I am so glad that you asked about night caches…thre is a great one which will be a small drive away that Lil’ Otter placed called “Walking in Circles, Seeing Red?”. We still talk about it…excellent night cache!!! One of our all time favorites…I would consider it a must do!

(smiles) I’d be honored to tag along with anyone interested in doing my Walking in Circles cache during that weekend.. I’ll really promise this time that no one gets wet feet (grins)… just give me a hollar if interested.. and which night of the picnic weekend you’d like to go.

07/27/2004 at 12:33 am #1758189Hey Bec…..
If I happened to be around that weekend…. where would I be camping?
07/28/2004 at 2:28 am #1758190Stooper and B. will be at Smokey Hollow Campground in Lodi. Never been there but it seems nice (and close). P.S. it is also Viva Las Vegas Weekend!!
Lil’ Otter, we have never been on a night cache and would love to try to find yours on either Fri/Sat. Whichever anybody else is going.

Well, that still seems to be THE question. The Sky High Campground does seem pretty nice….??? For me, the KOA outside Madison is too close to home (but not for the Iowans!)
So unless someone makes another suggestion — I guess my vote is still at the Sky High.
Does that help any?

07/28/2004 at 2:34 am #1758192Oh, and I’m thinking Friday night for sure — and possibly Saturday….

07/28/2004 at 2:40 am #1758193I found another one in the area as well, but I can’t find a website of their own…The Wunder Er’de Campground. It’s listed on Wisconsinvacations.com. The description of it says:
A “Four Seasons” family campground striving for harmony, serenity, and tranquility. 1700 feet of Whalen’s Bay shoreline (access to Lake Wisconsin).

608-635-2059I’m still liking the Sky High one just because of what it says about a view and all that.
07/28/2004 at 2:57 am #1758194Am I reading correctly? Does Sky High require a 2 day reservation for weekends?
And then the dorky question — if one is to stay at a campground for 2 night (and not in the area for a portion of one day), does one leave the tent up and hope no one steals your sleeping bag (yes, I’m a worrier…)?

07/28/2004 at 12:34 pm #1758195Most campgrounds will require a two night stay on a weekend and three nights on a holiday weekend. I have found, however, that if you just show up (or call and ask), they are a lot more likely to allow you one day only. If they have open sites, they aen’t going to turn you away. They just prefer a weekend stay. Tim and I have this problem all the time because I work Fridays until around 9 pm and he works at 8 am on Monday. That leaves us really only being able to camp Saturday nights and we have more than once paid for two nights and stayed only one. State parks do this too.
I have no problem leaving my stuff. Tim gets more worried about stuff like that than I do. We pack up our supplies- anything of more value- into the car during the day while we’re out but leave the tent and bedding. I don’t think you get a lot of theft at campgrounds, really. Not especially at campgrounds like that.
Oh! We keep the cooler with us too. I don’t quite see the point of it- Tim worries about people taking our food I guess, not that we ever bring much with us.
07/29/2004 at 10:04 pm #1758196Excellent! Thanks thennig! Might see you at Sky High Friday night!!

07/30/2004 at 3:55 am #1758197Hey Team Kilroy! There’s some talk about group camping for the WGA picnic weekend. It’s all in the earliest of stages right now. If you Iowa folk are interested, please contact me at [email protected]
Bec
And anyone else who might be interested in group camping, please let me know too!! You don’t just have to be from Iowa!
