Great idea!
I use a Palm but do not know all the tricks. It would be a great opportunity to introduce others and bump up our skills as well.05/12/2005 at 10:53 pm #1758482And I thought I was finishing up my education this week!!
But in all seriousness, I think clinics would be an excellent idea!

05/12/2005 at 11:00 pm #1758483I would participate but I would suggest that a virtual clinic is already in place. This stuff is part of the normal conversation at any event. Just recently, I was involved in such discussions at Stone-haven and the Oriental Breakfast. One can also post a message on the HELP board and you’ll get lots of answers.
The knowledge is also dispersed. For example I don’t use a Palm, I use a Pocket PC so I can’t help with a Palm device but can share info on GSAK. Others are experts on GSAK macros, spinner, and the PDA resident tools.
Any specific get together to spread the info would involve many experts and many novices, with everybody falling into both categories. But the first responsibility for novices is to get a start. Start doing pocket queries. YOU DO NOT NEED A PDA to use pocket queries. You need a GPS and cable to begin using them and GSAK or Spinner etc. Later you can always get a PDA after you see what others use.
You can take advantage of the toys incrementally. 2 weeks ago I posted a suggestion for GSAK on the geocaching.com boards. Turns out, the feature has been in GSAK for at least a year, I just never noticed it. You never stop learning.

05/12/2005 at 11:32 pm #1758484I started out using plucker/spinner method. That worked, but involved alot of steps. I have now went to cachemate and love it!! It gives me everything that the above did, plus more like logging your finds right from the cache page.. then able to upload this for gc.com logging.
I just started using GSAK since its the best program for the new Magellan Explorist 600 GPS. Wow what a very advanced program. I just figured out how to send the caches out. And it too a phone call from a guy on the gc.com forum to help out with that. Thats what I like about this hobby. You ask for help and you get lots of it!! So dont hesitate to ask.

“Be safe and Keep on Searchin”05/13/2005 at 2:22 pm #1758485True that the resources are already online, but sometimes people need to see it first hand. I’ve had a couple people ask me to “show” them because they couldn’t get it going.
The discussions at events are great but are fragmented, unscheduled and between only a few people at a time, all over a park. What I am suggesting is a scheduled clinic so people who want to learn or want to teach could come together.
So anyway, that’s all I’m saying is if you are not a book learner but a hands-on learner, a get together might be appropriate.
