I know, I know, this has been asked before, but I’ll ask it once again. Is it time to consider offering an opportunity to download waypoints for the temp geocaches before the event?
I recall the reasons that this has not been offered before other events, among them; 1) Waiting for waypoints to be uploaded to the GPS-r’s offers opportunities for board members and WGA members to visit with one another, 2) The process doesn’t really take that long, does it?, 3) When is the appropriate time to offer the download, some like to camp a few days before the event. 4) A few may go early.

So, that taken care of, there are also a few reasons why offering an opportunity to download waypoints ahead of time would be advantageous; 1) Some geocachers may like to preplan the search, 2) A few may not choose to wait in line, choosing to visit while searching or during the picnic, 3) Some just like to putz with technology.

So, let’s explore this, once again.

I know at the campout I could not get a down load to an Explorist 600.They will not work with EASY GPS.It would be nice to have the coordinates ahead of time so I don’t have to be entering them when I should be caching, or if someone doing the downloads had the capability to load to the Explorist that would be great.

Will the computer at hand have babel and a SD card reader to transefer waypoints?

I too have the Magellan Explorist 600 and would be nice to download the temp caches to my memory card for my 600. So I aggree on letting us have the coords before hand. Deffinately makes things easier at registeration table.

In the past at events, if you were uncertain that the event hosts would have the means to download waypoints to your unit, you would bring along your own cable. Would you be able to bring along the necessary stuff?

And there is always entering coordinates by hand! There are still some folks out there who cannot download any waypoints (like my mom).

Yea. I can bring my cord, But the new explorist has a different twist to downloading cords. So if the download table has the special explorist program, OR GSAK, nothing else works with the 600..

And yes we can manual input like your MOM, but that takes time and times awasted for caching and chatting. So whats the big deal and secret of just passing along the file.

I guess they think we might drive 3 hours during the night to raid all the caches before the event starts.

As of right now, it looks like we will have 3 or 4 computers set up to upload waypoints to people’s gps units.

The lines have always been short. The wait is only a couple minutes, if that. Think as the upload line as a chance to socialize

Unless you have a GPS that absolutely will not accept a data transfer file, I still would prefer not to release the waypoints ahead of time. There could be some rare exceptions if people were to contact us on a one on one basis.

If you need a rare cord for your gps, bring your’s along. We usually use ExpertGPS to transfer the files. I’ll check for the latest update and make sure my PC is current before the picnic.

I still think the con’s outweigh the pro’s regarding waypoint distribution before the event. I personally don’t see the problems with the current system unless your GPS can’t be interfaced with the computer.

I’ll put another word in for being able to DL early. It would be handy for those with custom icons and such. Also, something got buggered up with my unit at the campout after I got the coords uploaded to my unit. I’m not laying blame on anyone, It was just frustrating having my GPSr doing its own thing 90% of the time….got to the point where i just turned it off and was a tag along to the group i was with.

To make a long story even longer, I’d just be more comfortable using my own computer and other equipment to upload and sort, and all that good stuff.

    Hello, river_rat!

I’d welcome the opportunity to try to understand what’s up with your gpsr and get it un-buggered. What kind is it?

I looked at the expertgps site and didnt see anything about if the explorist is compatible. Does anyone know if it is compatible, or will there be other programs there. GSAK does work, by the way.

Smokey contacted Expert Gps and it does not support the Explorist 600 at this time. So how about giving the coordinates to those of us with an Explorist 600?

We’ll make sure someone has the coordinates and GSAK available on one of the laptops. That is what I use for GPS uploading. I’m not sure what the situation is with Explorist cables, but I believe that’s been answered already.

Fear not. We’ll get you uplaoded.

Or a member of the board will hand enter the data into your GPSr personally.
