I would like to start cacheing with my family but the GPS unit I have now is an old Garmin e-trex. So what would you recommend in th $200 price range?
It’s a RIGHT not a Privilege. Overturn 941.23I love my Magellan SporTrak Pro!! They are pretty accurate and run about $229 or so. My caching Buddy won one SporTrak Pro on eBay for $177 and it came with other odds and ends. Nice unit!
Quick thought: A few people, myself included, use Garmin GPS-III units, which are almost 10 years old. If the new ones can’t get a WAAS lock under tree cover they’re as accurate as the old ones.
The GPS-III can upload/download waypoints via a serial connection, but not detail maps. I use a USB to Serial converter. The street maps are built-in, and for $80/used/mint/eBay it’s a great unit. The GPS-V has downloadable maps and WAAS, and is also a good unit.
For caching accuracy I like the Magellan I used for a brief period.
As a note on WI State Statue 941.23, it should be overturned. The State is grossly wrong in this assumption, and the assumption that “the privilege of of self−defense” is a privilege and not a right, as stated therein. Realistically, most of 941 should be overturned, as its purpose is to remove power from the People and give it to the State, and that’s unconstitutional on so many fronts….

We have very limited experience with other units. We use a Garmin Geko 301 which is pretty no frills, but as long as the arrow points at the cache we’ll find it. Mapping, etc. seems neat, but not having it hasn’t affected us one bit. Of course I may be accused of being a technophobe…
We started with a Garmin Etrex and upgraded to the Garmin Legend. It has all the functions we need and we don’t even use some of them!
It sells around $150.00. Its a small, lightweight unit that has given so little problems that we purchased a second one last year.So can link to your computer (ie microsoft streets and trips)and upload info with any of those units?

It goes for just over $200, and comes with Garmin’s Citselect software.
Almost any other unit you will have to buy the mapping software seperately, for about $100.
I figure that the software runs about $100, the car power cable and car mount would have cost me another $50, so that is $150 in accesories that I would have had to buy with any other unit.
That means that I essentially got an autorouting GPSr for $50.

For Garmin, that means Mapsource products.
For Magellan I think it is Mapsend?

* * * * * * * * * *Not to start a holy war, but…If you have a Garmin, stick with a Garmin. Magellan’s have a different (not bad) way of doing things which is often confusing to Garmin users.

A poor little Garmin user can’t adapt to a Magellan. I never seem to have a problem w/ Commander Bob’s Garmin. I guess they just teach us Magellan users to be ready for anything…even a Garmin! …Oops…did I start that war that Chad was trying to avoid?
You started it a long time ago when I won my Garmin hat….and you asked why they mispelled Magellan. What a trouble maker!

With my Garmin, I’ve found well over 300 caches.
On the other hand, I have not found even ONE SINGLE CACHE with a Magellan.

With my Magellan Sportrack Map I’ve found well over 1400 caches.
I hate to say it, but I have actually borrowed Commander Bob’s Garmin (for a trip to CA…it had turn by turn directions…very important when travelling…am I making excuses? ). I only found a few caches, but did enjoy the driving directions in a somewhat unfamiliar area.
