it has been talked about on the geocaching.com forums for a couple months with only poor sources for the info. finally garmin posted info about these models a few days ago on there site. thought some of you might want to see.

nice to see that these new models finally get a memory card slot.(mini SD)
very interesting that the 60x/76x models get a new SiRF chip for faster and more reliable signal acquisition

Very cool. It’s interesting that in the news release, Garmin specifically mentions geocachers. That shows what a large and important market we are for GPS manufacturers.

I’m still using my 6-year old Garmin eMap. I keep postponing purchasing a new one because the technology keeps improving and I don’t want to miss out on anything. Therefore I miss out on everything.

The one smart thing I did was purchase Garmin stock 5 years ago. Since then then stock price has increased 254%, with an average annual increase of 29%.

I just bought one of Garmin’s new products, but not a hand-held GPS. Since I travel quite a bit during the spring and summer, I purchased the new StreetPilot 7500 for the cachemobile. It’ll also come with traffic, weather, and XM Satellite Radio on it. I got it at a great discount too (saved about $700 from retail value w/the antenna).

I mainly got it for the new cachemobile I plan on getting this summer, but wanted to get the StreetPilot now to learn how to use. It’s supposed to ship next week. I can’t wait!

They give the MSRP on the website.
Legend Cx – $321
Vista Cx – $375
60Cx – $482
60CSx – $535
76Cx – $535
76CSx – $589
Figure around 75% of MSRP for street price around 3 months after release. (Example: List price on a 60CS (no x) is $482. On GPSNow, the price is $360)

Now, a question for all you experienced Garmin users. Can anyone explain the advantage of the 76 over the 60, other than a bit more memory? They seem to have the same features and the 60 is lighter and slightly smaller, so what are you getting for the extra $50? I’m currently using a little Garmin Etrex Yellow, so either of these would be quite a bit bigger, but I suspect that between the new technology and a better internal antenna, they would get significantly better reception in heavy cover.

The 76 has a slightly larger screen and it floats.

BTW I think you will find that little yellow ETrex’s have found a lot more caches than either the 60 or the 76.

i guess i could sell me legendC to get one of these new models.
when we bought our legendC we paid $250 from tigergps.com. about a month after that garmin lowered the price so at tigergps you can currently buy the legendC for $209.

what i am getting at, is that at least for the vista/legend CX the price is actually the same as what garmin was charging a few months ago for the regular legendC/vistaC.
tigergps is taking preorders for these new models and they all are about $50 more than the original models.

If I had it to do all over again, I would have went with the 60 series. The primary reason? The buttons are on the bottom instead of at the top.

I am in the market for a new GPSr. I want to replace my Summit and get something with mapping. I’m a little torn between these new models and the idea of trying to take advantage of the falling prices on the current versions. The current higher end models have quite a lot of memory anyway, so it really comes down to whether the new antenna features are worth more money. Ah, so many decisions…
