My wife and I are relatively new, 68 finds and one placed, to Geocaching, but have noticed a definite difference between caches placed north and south of the cheese line. The IL caches are placed in generally more open areas and hardly ever camoed. I have seen so many plain tupperware tubs down in Il it isn’t funny. Up in WI, people go a bit further to make it more fun to search.
Anyone have an idea why?

Yeah, I don’t completely disagree with you. However, we’ve done a ton caching in some of the Forest Preserves of the Chicagoland area and have really had some challenging finds. The “Lord of the Rings” series near Orland Park is FANTASTIC. Also, any of the caches in the Palos preserves or Waterfall Glen are fantastic.
I would be willing to guess at a couple of reasons-
The IL DNR mandates the use of see-through containers of a limited size on state land.
WGA members have made a continued effort to “raise the bar” on cache quality. Setting the example for newer geocachers is a good way to help ensure quality cache placement continues. IL has lacked an active association until more recently.
Hopefully with the birth of Geocachers of Northeastern Illinois, their group will work to provide the same kind of guidance. They do have some great geocachers on their team!
