Today I got out of work early and the kids were off school a noon. why not go out and find some caches. So we came upon the second of the day. while zeroing in on the location we found an empty plastic jar. Well almost empty. It had a not in it stating that they found the cache without a GPS that if the wanted to find it it suck becausethe took everything in it except for the note and the container. It was then thrown about 30 feet from the hiding spot. Now I truly understand why we refer to them as muggles.
I took the opportunity to teach my kids about helping the cache owner. They restocked the cace with some of our swag and made a teporary log to put into the cache. I then replaced it into the hiding spot and covered it to help hide it from the next one.
Now I need more SWAG…. Off to the dollar store.

unfortunately there are people out there that want to ruin the fun for others. thank goodness there are more out there who are like you. that was a very kind thing you and your kids did. i’m sure the cache owner will appreciate what you’ve done.

Same thing happened to me last summer. Fortunately, one of the things I was able to salvage from the site was the logbook. So I got things back together best as I could. The challenge was I had no idea where it was originally hidden! So again, I just did the best I could with rehiding it.
There are always small-minded people who enjoy destoying things. Mugglers like this are the same ones who break people’s lawn ornaments for giggles. I just don’t get it.

* * * * * * * * * *Ever see the show Malcolm in the middle? There are plenty of those type of misfits out there … anything to get someone upset. Yes, that is lame. Although I’ve come upon caches that people have not re-covered very well, so I think a little of the blame can lay there. I always try to re-cover the cache better than I found it. Once I had to walk in some sand near the cache, on the way out, I even took a branch from the ground and sifted my shoe prints out of the sand and threw some leaves over the ground to make it look fresh. People need to rehide better.
I just don’t understand people. Why do some have to ruin it for others. If it ain’t yours dont touch it, especially if ya don’t knwo WHAT it is. Just saw the note that was left at one of Marc_54140’s cachea about what THAT muggle did to Marc opne cache. It is frustrating. Fortunately, I only have issues with 4-legged muggles and Mother Nature. That’s bad enough LOL
I understand about the swag too. My situations havebenn where leave much more & take nothing, when caches have been invaded BY cachers and there is nothing left but bottle caps, stones or other pieces of…..well….garbage.
I can relate to this.. One of my caches was found about 1 mile away from the hide location. The person that found it, however, contacted someone @ groundspeak, who in turn contacted me. After a few emails, we met up to have the cache returned, which included a lost TB that was in it. This person was happy to return it, due to the recent press regarding geocaching. I hope that if others find my other caches, they will be returned in the same manner.
One of the problems I think is that we share the same stomping ground as alot of wayward teenagers, who tend not to have alot of respect for anything. One of my caches has been completely taken, and I know that it was near some spots where alot of school kids “hang out”. Don’t get me wrong, there’s alot of good kids out there. I just think you have a better chance of having your cache trashed or taken if it was discovered by muggle kids instead of muggle adults.
I know someone who had quite a few cache hides (approx. 10)in a small city. Last fall 9 of their 10 hides came up muggled. The only cache that wasn’t muggled was a puzzle cache. This spring she put out 2 more caches, and they were both muggled within the first week. It doesn’t seem like this is happening to any of the other caches in the area, so she is very frustrated. It looks like she will try to do a few more puzzle caches and try to do a members only cache. She figures then at least someone would have to either work or pay to steal her cache hides. It really stinks that something like this has to happen.
