After a nice hike in the Kettle Moraine I downloaded my trail marker waypoints and track log to Mapsource. It occurred to me that if all the people who walked the trails did this and there was a way to share the information on a website, a pretty good trail mapping system could be created. Wouldn’t it be great if you could download segments of the ice age or other trails to your gpsr? Does anyone know if this is being done already?
I don’t know if it’s being done in Wisconsin for hiking trails, but one geocacher (mtnbike) has a good tutorial on how to create nice trail maps for mountain biking. I’m sure the same process could be applied to hiking trails. Read more here: http://www.wavelengthstudios.com/mtnbike/gpsmapstutorial/index.htm
I just started to map out all the Iceage trail near belleville,WI. This place is huge and seems that everytime I hike there I find another trail, so i decided that it would be cool to have a mapsource file I could load up anytime I go there.
I also thought that it would be great if there was a website to share tracks with others. I can just imagine going hiking anywhere in the state and being able to go download a mapsource track log of the area showing all the trails. that would be slick!
EDIT: I did find one website that is for sharing waypoints/track logs but it looks like not many people are using it. http://www.gpsdata.org/index.html

Check out this website… http://www.localhikes.com …. I joined sometime back with intent to add a bunch to the website for the Milwaukee Metro area and just haven’t had enough time or forgot to clear track logs before going out… I think this is a great thing to do and would love to contribute to ice age trail maps… This is something that could be “hosted” on your own free webspace if so inclined….
It’s a great idea!!
Cache on!!
