I just bought a new 60CSx off Ebay which is not behaving normally. Luckily the vendor is willing to give me a refund on the purchase. Before I go through the trouble of returning it, I thought I would describe the problem and maybe someone would know how to correct it. The GPS does a wonderful job of picking up satellites, displaying maps, downloading waypoints from GSAK (and back up to GSAK), but it is completely failing to do one thing: NAVIGATE TO A WAYPOINT! I can tell it to go to a waypoint, but there is no pointer on the compass screen, the distance to destination and bearing are blank, and basically you have to look at the (very poor) basemap to navigate, with no indication of arrival, etc. (I think my Etrex base map might even be better, and it is completely BLANK.) I have downloaded and installed the latest firmware updates, reset to factory default settings several times, and talked to a guy at Garmin, who couldn’t find any similar problems in their database or give me any kind of useful help. He suggested sending it in for warranty repair, but since I bought it on Ebay, I’m just going to return it rather than repair it. So, before I put it in the mail tomorrow, any ideas???
05/05/2006 at 1:50 pm #1761552Hope this is not too late. I have been researching buying a new GPS and have read many complaints about the unit you mentioned. If you go to the groundspeak forums and look under the Software and equipment threads you will find this and other links regarding your unit. This particular link talks more about the altimeter malfunctioning, but seems like the unit as a whole has a few problems. Good luck and I hope this helps!

“ARGH – I know it’s here somewhere…”05/05/2006 at 4:25 pm #1761553and if those links don’t help, maybe you could draw arrows on the unit with a black sharpie.

05/06/2006 at 10:00 pm #1761555The unit has been returned. Lucky for me that the Ebay guy was decent and agreed to accept the return.
After spending some time on the Garmin website, I determined that they would have refused to honor the warranty on this unit anyway, because it was not purchased through one of their “authorized” vendors. How the average buyer can know which vendor is authorized is beyond me. It seems like Garmin is more interested in protecting their authorized dealers than providing a quality product to their customers.
Since Garmin has taken this position, I will no longer buy ANYTHING from Garmin until they rethink this particular business practice. This is too bad for them, since I am in the market for a new GPS. If someone has experience dealing with Garmin on GPS’s purchased online, please post here to let the rest of us know.
05/06/2006 at 10:05 pm #1761556Welcome to the world of Magellan, Land of the never-lost signal! My newest addition is the eXplorist XL, great satellite lock and huge screen, but if you’re looking for features, better go with the eXplorist 400,500,600.
On the other hand there is Lowrance… not familiar with them but I’ve not heard anything bad either.
