Hello, everyone. We were thinking of doing a lot more camping this summer in WI and are looking for people’s favorite campsites. We like remote places with lots of nature and peace and quiet, and lots of cool geo-caches in the neighborhood. We camp in a tent and prefer campsites that aren’t too loud (especially at 3am), where there is good separatation between the campsites, and that aren’t packed full of obnoxious drunk people.

Thanks for any advice you can give us.

You can’t go wrong by camping at ottawa lake. There’s quiet, big woods & a nice small lake to cool off in. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/specific/kms/camping.html
There are a bunch of really great caches here!

Buckhorn state park sites 20-22. Theses sites are walk-in but a cart is supplied.
This is a very quiet area on the lake. The sites are very far apart. Our favorite is Carrol lake in the Northern Highland State Forest. Once you have a park picked out let me know and I can give site recommendations.

We always like Mauthee Lake, the sites on top of the hill in the 500 are great for viewing meteor showers and the like on clear nights.

If you wait until after Memorial Day weekend.. Buckhorn will have about 5 new caches.. two night-time ones as well as all geocaches focusing on the historical of the park.. I’ve been working with Manager Joe (Buckhorn’s and Roche-A-Cri State Park) and he wished me to create caches in Buckhorn.

The night time caches will also be available to those that don’t have a gps.. this way those that camp here in the park will have an adventure to do after dusk.

We’ve camped Buckhorn. It’s a beautiful park. You can “cart-in” to the campsites OR take a canoe by lake.

Wow, this is just amazing. We camped at Mauthe Lake, site 511 this weekend. We had the reservation for weeks before you made the recommendation. This was our “test” camping trip, not too far from home, to practice for longer trips. It was great, except for the part where I was trying for Camocache #1 and managed to lock all the keys in the car. Fortunately a nice DNR ranger was able to jigger the lock. But the campsites were great, very quiet, and private. It’s definitely on our list of campsites to come back to.

Sylvania Wilderness near Watersmeet, Mi. Base camp on Clark Lake or paddle to a remote site on a wilderness lake. Lots of remote, wilderness caches placed by upnorthdoc in the area.

Anything in the Nicolet National Forest is great. There are many primitive campsites, walk-ins, and campgrounds. I don’t think any have electricity but they have beautiful views, many lakes, great fishing, hiking trails and much wildlife.

Point Beach in Two Rivers isn’t too far from you, and has a few caches…
