I invite the candidates to reply to the following question below.
Geocaching celebrated its 5 year anniversary this last year. Where do you see the WGA as it celebrates the 10th year of geocaching and how do we get there?

02/01/2006 at 5:07 am #1761803Geocaching will certainly continue to evolve, and I hope the WGA will evolve along with it. Not that we will always agree with Standards & Practices set by the geocaching community as a whole.
I like that we have our own things in Wisconsin. We created the term “finder’s tree” and I know that has crept into other places. I like that we have a stance on temporary caches that the WGA stands behind. I’m sure that we will continue to create that which makes geocaching in Wisconsin unique to Wisconsin.
I hope that as the years progress we continue to have a diversified and cohesive group with the WGA. I don’t know that major changes will occur, may be just refinement or redefining of what we do that makes us an organization.
If we continue to spread the positive word about geocaching throughout Wisconsin, I believe we can expand the size of our group. This should have a positive impact on the placement of geocaches (as long as we keep up the good work we have begun with the WI DNR and City of Madison). We can act as a positive role model for other states!
Oh, and when we get to 10 years — we should have a big party!!

That’s a hard one to answer.. So much can happen these days in a very short time… I think we need to continue to be a group that supports each other and is also willing to pitch a hand where it’s needed..
I think geocaching will continue to grow in the next 5 years and we need to stay current with whatever the trend seems to be at the time. We should never forget where we came from but be flexible enough to make changes..
I think, even right now, we need to loose some ego’s and remember what it means to be an “association”… Help each other. If we can’t maintain what we have now, and have had in the past, we will destroy ourselves from within. I agree with “Tie”.. Strength in numbers..
Enough said.

02/02/2006 at 3:26 am #1761806Tough one. Some of the things I would like too see:
I would like to see the WGA grow in the number of active members from all across the state. Continued hosting of events throughout the state, WGA banners on cache pages etc.
I would like to see the WGA continue to work with the WDNR, local communities, and other organizations to promote geocaching as a positive activity for our state.
I would like the WGA to serve as role model for other organizations. Open forums where debate and discussions can take place, a board who supports its members despite outside pressure/influence(i.e. event logging), and a board that eagerly seeks the opinions/comments from its members on issues before making decisions.
I have to echo Greyhounders idea – a BIG party.

02/02/2006 at 4:11 am #1761807Being a member of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association for almost 4 years, I feel the changes to our Association have mirrored those to geocaching.com. Our Association began as a group of friends who enjoyed the new geocaching pastime and wanted to share their excitement with others. We now have over 600 and probably closer to 1000 members.
I see geocaching and the WGA continuing to increase in numbers and scope. As we grow as an Association, we will need to meet many new challenge, some expected and some not so obvious. We will need a good Board that will be able to work with it’s membership to advance in a positive direction.
Members will come and go, as in most groups, but the corps of our group will be those dedicated to the outdoors and hiking, who appreciate the environment, and enjoy the thrill and mysteries presented with each new find. It will take dedicated leaders to continue representing geocachers, educating and negotiating with land managers, and still having energy to put on the wonderful quality events for which the WGA is known.
I think there will be new variations of geocaching and as our State becomes more saturated with geocaches, locations may have to become limited-termed, to give new comers a chance to place a quality geocache. I foresee more events per year in different regions of our State to keep events from becoming too large or unmanageable and damaging to the environment.
It will be an exciting and challenging 5 years.02/05/2006 at 4:25 am #1761808quote:

I left this one for last for a couple reasons- one I had to get ready for the Geocaching 101 class and two it was something I wanted to take some time to think about before I posted. I’m with everyone else on this one… it’s a tough question.
In 10 years, I see the WGA having a solid relationship with the DNR: one of trust, accountability and respect on both parts. I see greater physical interaction with the department, utilizing key WGA board members as liaisons. To obtain this outcome, we (the WGA) could, more so, assist with the education of concerned community members, the DNR’s present & future members and other involved county & state divisions.
In 10 years I see the possibility that Wisconsin grow into one of the most populous states for caches. Having many more cachers around the world, an interesting twist for the Dept of Tourism to utilize is the bragging rights for the state. It would be awesome to think that the WGA could assist in the tourism industry of the state.
Are these far fetched ideas??? Maybe…maybe not! Without some sort of mission, vision, goal or dream such as these, what would the purpose of an awesome association, like the WGA, be?
On a much more farfetched note……I see geocaching as a competitive sport in the Olympics for the year 2018. Hey…Tug of War was a competitive sport from 1900-1920 and now we have snowboarding. Who says it can’t happen??!! All the best competitors would come out of Wisconsin… of course!!
Oh yeah & 2 thumbs up for that party thing for a 10 yr anniversary!!
