    Hey Bill,

I know you’ve been a regular on a lot of our event’s cache hiding committees. I know you’ve also helped the board on a couple other projects such as the FRS repeater.

Can you refresh my memory on which events you’ve helped us organize, and what some of your involvement has been?

    Good question Brian!!

A lot of time has passed since I first got involved in Geocaching.. It’s hard to remember all the what’s, when’s, and where’s. But, here’s my best shot…

I guess the first event I can remember being involved in was when I was honored by my t-shirt design being chosen for the 2003 Geo-Campout at High Cliff State Park. Anne and I attended that event and had to leave early. There was an emergency in the family.. Wish we could have stayed.. What we got to see was awesome!!

Next one would have been the 2004 Geo-Campout at Hartman Creek State Park.. I got to hide some of the caches there for the event and had a great time doing it too!! Hiding caches for events to this day is one of my most favorite things to do.. It allows me to be a little evil and I also make an attempt to make some of them “easier” to find.. I love nothing more than somebody coming up to me and saying how they enjoyed a cache I placed.. It’s better than finding them, for me at least..

Next was.. The 2004 Geo-Picnic at Mackenzie.. Got to hide some caches there as well and scouted a good place to put the repeater up… Again, had a great time hiding caches!! It’s fun to get together with the group before hand and come up with “a game plan”. We really make an attempt to use the entire park. Somehow it seems I always pick the “short straw” and end up placing the ones furthest out from base camp!!(Secretly, I like the far out ones!!!) Don’t tell anyone!

For Lake Wissota, Anne was pregnant with our third little cacher.. So we passed on this one… I bet I missed alot..

Next, we made sure to attend the 2005 Geo-Picnic at Greenbush Trails… I think we were having a bit of a hard time coming up with people to hide caches(everyone was busy). I got a last minute phone call looking for some kind of help and decided to go help hide caches once again.. I think the thermometer hit 96 deg. that day!! Yikes!! Humid too!! But, we got some good ones out there again and everyone had a good time!! Success!.. Anne and I camped in the area to make up for missing the Geo-Campout. Had a few guests at our campsite Friday and Saturday nights we had fun meeting you all there!! Thanks for a great time!

And the rest is unimportant or forgotten… I think this is all accurate. If anyone thinks otherwise, chime in and help me to remember.. We’ve had a terrific time doing what we do and hope to for a long time to come.. Thanks to WGA for all the opportunities..

    Cache on!!

In response to WZBT03’s post elsewhere in these forums.. I quote:

**Note this was in response to a real post which seems to have disappeared now…**

First I would like to say that the board, from what people tell me, does a great job with the picnic and campout. The one event I have been to that was sponsored by WGA was quite well done.
My question to potential board members or even current board members is:

1- What will you do that can only be accomplished from a board position?

I wouldn’t say that I’d be doing anything which can ONLY be done from a board position. Everyone can make differences on their own and the idea of such should be encouraged. I think having a board in the first place is a good way to concentrate the ideas/ideals of the entire membership into something that entities such as WDNR or Local Govts. tend to take more seriously… I’d like to be a part of that

2- Since discussions with the DNR have only resulted in more restrictions on geocaches – should they be continued?

Here, I’m not sure about the restrictions you’re talking about. Could you please “fill”? If it’s in reference to SNA’s and the like. I see those as positive restrictions. Keeping those areas clear of caches does not come second nature to everyone. I’d hate to see them ruined.

3- The geocoin idea which was pushed by the membership (actually one person I think), not the board, is a great idea.
Should it now be controlled by the board as to the final design etc or by a membership vote?

As far as I know the coin has already been minted. I belive the final design was voted on by the membership..

4- Did making WGA a non-profit organization have the desired effect with the DNR that was explained to us?

    Honestly, I don’t know..

5- Since less then 10% of state geocachers vote in elections, should they be held in the summer when more people are involved?

I geocache all year long when I can. I read the boards all year. I’d think that anyone who cares enough is involved whether caching or reading and is aware of what’s going on..

6- Since the cache rescue plan is in the discussion this time around, what is the plan that is proposed and why can’t it be done now and why hasn’t the current board already done it?

Personally I think this thing could have been put to bed a long time ago. I know for awhile the idea of having a group of people per region(TBD) who would commit to doing the actual retrievals.. Hopefully, there would be an excess to cover “sick days” etc… I think if we designated regions and asked people to volunteer, you’d have more than enough help in no time… Maybe there would have to be one person that acts as a “dispatcher” of sorts.. We could work on this and have it running by spring I’d think..

These are just my thoughts and if you do not care to respond to them if you are running for a board position, that is okay.

Does any of this make sense? I’m not promising the moon and stars here. I really belive the membership is what makes this all work and you just need to have a few people comitted to bringing it all together… Thanks for the great questions!!

Actually Bill my original post stayed on the forum all of 15 minutes when I decided that I really did not care what the answers would be and I then deleted it.

I did find your answers to be honest and constructive in nature.

Thanks for responding to the post.

    Bill,

Thanks for filling us in on your past involvement. I forgot all about the winning t-shirt design.

Great answers to wzbt’s questions. I really love your response regarding SNA’s.

I was reading your bio and saw this:

Proper identification of cache containers to avoid possible mis-identification by authorities is a major goal for me… I’ve designed and submitted some possibilities. I’d like to see us adopt one and go with it… One bad event could potentially spoil all our fun.

I was trying to do so forum searches and couldnt’ find your postings regarding this. If I remember right, it had to do with making some custom cache container labels. I remember they would be something like the GC.com labels, but with some local flair and perhaps different info.

Can you give us some more details this idea?

    Thanks

    Sure,

I have in the past, dabbled a bit with a couple of ideas regarding a sticker to apply to cache containers which may help reduce the chance that a container could be percieved as something dangerous… See it here: http://home.wi.rr.com/lcdcreations/Misc/geosticker.gif
I can probably get these printed up rather cheaply.. I’m sure they would not be as expensive as the regular GC stickers…

The other item is a downloadable .pdf or .doc file. It’s what I’m calling a “geo-permission” document for the cache hider and land manager to fill out… This way permission is for sure and the land manager has a hard copy of caches on his/her turf… Further lessening the chance of mis-identifications… See it here: http://home.wi.rr.com/lcdcreations/Misc/GeoPermission.pdf

These are not final drafts by any stretch. Maybe we need to tweek them a bit, what do you think?? These are available whether or not I get a position on the board this year… Always will be…

    Open for your thoughts…

    Bill

I’m going to get in here before the final buzzer and thank those that took part in the elections. And also those that made the election possible. It shows you all have an interest in what goes on in regards to geocaching here in Wisconsin.. Regardless of the outcome, I’m sure we certainly have a dedicated bunch! Thanks to those that nodded in my direction as well… See you all at the campout!

    As always,
    Cache On!!!
