Not really planning ahead for a future gps receiver purchase, last winter I bought a gps18 usb with city select 7. I bought this bundle knowing that one of the two unlock codes was used up, and we used the remaining on our legendC.
we got our 60cx recently and started looking into getting something more than topo/metroguide we have on it. To purchase another unlock code for city select(as far as I can tell) it will cost $100….. since this is only slight less than a brand new copy of city navigator with two unlock codes, buying one unlock code seems kinda silly.

The reason I started this post is to ask anyone who has used both cityselect and city navigator if there is any real difference?

Okay, may be wrong on this one, one of the greater experts can correct me, but City Select won’t work on the new “X” units. They changed the program code to match their dedicated in-car units. This is the reason that GSAK had problems loading waypoints to the new models. So you’ll have to get Navigator. Hope that’s helpful.

I had never heard that, in fact have read a few things on GC.com forum about people using city select with the new X models. The only difference that I have heard about is the map segment sizes being larger in city navigator(this is suppose to change back to the smaller size with version8)

I would actually prefer the larger map region sizes, since as of right now there is a limit of 2025 map segments in the unit. use a few topo maps and this fills up fast.

I’m more interested in the actual map data(roads, ect.) and if there is much difference. if i compare metroguide 6 to city select 7, city select 7 the roads are in more correct position, shows roads in parks, & also 3/4 of the POI locations are closer to there actual locations. hopefully with city navigator 8 there is just as noticeable improvements.

Not 100% sure if this rumor is true, but I read in Geocaching.com Forums, that City Select is being phased out by the upcoming release of City Navigator DVD, which will have smaller segments of Maps.

Anybody hear anything more about Navigator V8? I’ve been looking at a few sites and V7 is “back ordered” and they’re not taking orders. I assume it’s likely they’re waiting for V8? I would like to take care of getting something for an upcoming trip and don’t have much longer to wait. Any ideas on when to expect to be able to get 8?

I have also been following this closely since buying my 76CSX. Nav 8 was going to be released May 31st, went to the web site today, now not until June 14th. I have the web site bookmarked at work, and will post tomorrow.

city select is being phased out, it started back when I purchased the gps18 bundle. I couldn’t find city select anymore on most websites & I wanted the smaller map regions of city select for our old legendC. so I bought the gps18 bundle just to get the software.
also I have read that the new version of city navigator will use the same small map segments as city select. I’m not buying city navigator till version 8 comes out, though I know in the past garmin has let people with the previous version upgrade for $50.

I noticed that the pre-programed cards for Europe have NT in there name, so it is “city navigator NT”. reading online this seems to stand for New technology, and what it boils down to is the maps take up half the space for the same size segments. not sure if the dvd with be NT version, but if the pre-programed cards are I don’t see why the dvd wouldn’t also be NT.

guess we will all have to wait and see.

“guess we will all have to wait and see.”

      Yeah,

It looks like I’ll still be using my back seat teenage autorouter for our upcoming trip.

        another alternative….

I was reading on gc.com forum this morning and thought I would share one of the posts.

        QUOTE: zapped
“My choice was neither City Select nor City Navigator. I used Metroguide USA v3 for several years, until I purchased MetroGuide North America v7 just recently. You can find v7 for about $80 street if you look around. There were and are no unlock codes and all map segments can be freely downloaded to any/all Garmin GPS units you choose (given they support mapping). The software is not copy-protected nor does it require serial numbers or activation to install on your PC.

The downside is the recent Metroguide versions do not (officially) support routing on the unit, only on the PC. However, all the data is available on the Metroguide DVD but Garmin’s MapSource wrapper-software strips the routing info on the way down to your GPS. The workaround to that is a simple wrapper program “img2gps” . Using that wrapper to download your Metroguide maps allows routing to be performed within your GPS unit.”

        img2gps can be found here

I tried img2gps with metroguide version6 and it works great on the 60cx, we now have full auto-routing of roads! I only wish I had metorguide version7 so the map data would be the same as cityselct7(it shows slightly more)

since I already own metroguide6, cityselect7, and topo US I wasn’t looking forward to buying any more software, especially since all I would basicly be doing is unlocking autorouting on our new one. now I can just wait awhile to upgrade the software.

❗ AHA! I finally won an auction on ebay for a Garmin 60cx at a price I was willing to pay ($291.51) and I knew I had seen this reference to img2gps. I spent the last hour searching for the reference. I should have bookmarked the link when I first saw it. Anyway, thanks again for posting it so I too can use my Mapsource Metroguide v6 maps for routing on the 60cx when it arrives…

I’ve been using the metroguide 6 maps for routing on my 60cx allot, and I do sometimes get some really strange routes.
Since I posted the info about using img2gps this I have started to learn to make my own topo maps with more detail than garmins topo. I use img2gps to upload those maps too, when I make the topo maps I make them transparent so I can have metroguideV6 up for routing and have topo showing at the same time.

I’m definitely no expert at making maps and have never been able to get the water info and topo working together. I found this site that explains some of the steps to making your own topo maps.

I received an email from Garmin and they stated that they are phasing out city select and all updates for it and they suggest city navigator V8.

This is true but if you don’t have one of the newer models with the removable storage for maps, the newer software could be a problem. I remember reading all the map segments are 4x larger, some to large to fit in the legendC/vistaC.

This is probably part of the reason that all the old C model garmins are now discontinued. only Cx models will be available now.
