This Cache was not found, then a Should Be Archived note was left. I looked at it, and since the owners hadn’t checked into the site since 2003, it really appeared to be abandond (and missing) so I archived it.

Then somebody went out and found it….. It is still there.

I’m looking for somebody who wants to take this cache under their wing and make it their own. It is located between Baraboo and Richland Center.

    Any takers?

I MIGHT be willing to adopt it. It is just about an hour from my house (in Madison) and I don’t get that way very often, but it would be doable. If no one else steps up, I will rescue it. Anyone else a little closer?

How about some more discussion on the benefits of adopting a cache?

It seems to me that we would be better served by trashing out and archiving most caches that are abandoned. It opens up the area for new caches, new themes, and new hunts. In some cases it would also allows for nature to repair the area that the cache was located. (re-growth of greenery, etc.)

Why should we archive a perfectly good cache? If someone wants to adopt it, why not just let them? Then we don’t need to put another cache there…there’s already one there. If there’s nothing wrong with the cache, other than the owner(s) chose to neglect it, then why not let someone else take it over?

    Hi Tye,

This is a great little county park about 20 miles from our home. If you still need someone to watch over it, we’d be willing to adopt. There’s a nice lake for fishing and trails around the lake. Also a very nice campground. Plus we were the FTF this cache!

I’ll start the adoption process right away. Thanks for stepping up.

Thanks also to GoJeepers… we found somebody a bit closer.

Thanks Tie, and also Thanks GoJeepers. Let us know when the cache is set for adoption, we’ll get some items ready for the container and go check it out to preform any needed maintenance.

Glad some one was able to adopt this one! I will be looking forward to finding once it is up and running again.

I just received word that the adoption has gone through.

Hotdogs, you are the proud new parents of a new (to you) geocache!

    Thanks!

    Thanks for your help, Tie!!

Cathunter – for the record – I agree with you on this. I know we haven’t always seen eye-to-eye on things. However, I believe your discussion is a good one.

I love the idea of changing out wet caches, or adopting those caches that have been placed by individuals that have been caching for a week and then fall off the face of the earth!

However, what I liked most about your comment was that we need to let nature regenerate. Too many caches that have been in place for a year or more have wear and tear on the environment around it. I would hope that geocachers are environmentalists (although I have found that many aren’t) that want to see nature areas preserved. Caches can be placed elsewhere.

True nature-lovers have a simple expression: “Leave no trace.” Unfortunately, many geocaches inadvertently leave deep scars on the earth from bushwacking and trampling.

    Food for thought…

Flame away folks. I’m sure some of you are just waiting to… 🙂 LOL

    [Personal Opinion]
So far, the cache mentioned above has been visited (logged) 12 times in the past year.

If a new cache were placed nearby, how many times do you think it might be visited in the first month?

As far as envrionmental impact, an existing cache is likely to cause far less damage than a brand-new one.

    Buy the Tie –

Competely agree. I should have clarified that I was talking about a more macro perspective, not this cache specifically. 12 visits a year is more than appropriate. I guess I was talking more about caches that get 12 visits per month.

    Sorry for the confusion.

I agree with what you stated…
