I volunteered to do an informal “intro to geocaching” presentation at REI in October. I seem to remember reading about powerpoint presentations that people had prepared and were willing to share. I did a very quick search of the forums and links on this site, but didn’t find what I was looking for. So I’ll just ask – does anyone have a presentation that would be appropriate that I could use or get ideas from? I’ll also do more searching here and on the web when I get more time.
Also, if anyone has tips for this type of presentation, please feel free to pass them on either here or by private message. Hard to know the makeup of the crowd, but she said most will be knowledgeable about GPS. Since there’s no sign-up, I have no idea how many people there will be – she said could be 5 or more than 30. If it’s a small group, I’d like to take them outside to find temporaries, although it will be dark.
Thanks!

09/27/2006 at 1:09 am #1765997We would also be interested in PowerPoints. We seem to be doing introductory geocaching sessions fairly often to a variety of audiences.
Thanks,

09/29/2006 at 3:00 am #1765998Here’s the Powerpoint I created for the WPRA convention: http://wi-geocaching.com/info/WPRAGeocaching.ppt
It takes awhile to download, so be patient.
Jeremy, can we get this link posted on the new site somewhere?11/02/2006 at 2:48 am #1765999The geocaching clinic I presented at REI went pretty well I think. There were about 20 people and I don’t think they died of boredom, despite my presentation skills.
I borrowed heavily from the powerpoint presentations above and added a few of my own ideas. Thanks for sending them my way. If anyone would like to see what I put together, you can get it here:
http://www.logicweave.com/misc/IntroToGeocaching.pptJust to warn you: due to quite a few embedded images it’s large (about 5MB). You should view it in slideshow mode because there are a lot of graphics and pictures that slide in and overlap the text. If you view it in your web browser, click on the slide itself to advance (don’t click next page arrow because you won’t get the graphics that slide in). BTW, if you don’t have powerpoint, you can download a free Powerpoint viewer from Microsoft.

11/02/2006 at 3:52 am #1766001Is it possible to save this as a stand alone slide show? Actually I know that you can. I was thinking that many people may not have access to Powerpoint and if it was a stand alone file anybody could use it.
Thanks
11/02/2006 at 6:07 am #1766002Very nicely done and well organized. Using the 5 Ws provides good logical organization, but maybe Why should be first or earlier to “sell” people on the activity before attempting to explain it to them?
To help those who might want to give this presentation to other groups, how long did it take you to present this material? At 60 to 120 seconds per slide, I’m guessing it took at least an hour and a half. Someone who had less time could probably remove the TB slides, etc. to make it fit.
I packaged up the presentation along with the PowerPoint viewer as a standalone .exe file. The standalone version is available here, but is even larger than the regular PowerPoint file (6.5 MB vs 5 MB). Doug, if you don’t want to publish it on the WGA site, let me know and I’ll remove it.
11/02/2006 at 7:10 pm #1766003Jeremy, thanks for packaging it up – that’s fine if you want to leave it on the website. You could put the .ppt there too if you want since anyone who gives the presentation will probably want to edit it with current info and use maps from their area. (For example, as soon as I tell people to ignore the Packers and go geocaching instead, they start playing halfway decent and are on the verge of going to .500! 😀 ) Also, many of the pictures are my own, but others I used without permission from the existing powerpoint presentations mentioned above and a few from TB pages on geocaching.com (specifically Cindy the Cinderblock). I assume it’s not a problem, but thought I’d better mention it. If you think it’s important, I can ask for permission for the Cindy TB pics, but can’t do much about the others since I don’t know their source.
I actually managed to get through it in 1 hour. A lot of the slides you can go through very quickly. But I knew it was going to be close so I had to talk fast and hurry through some sections. If I were to do it again given a 1 hour time limit, I’d try to pare it down first.
(edit: grammar)
11/09/2006 at 8:06 pm #1766004Because Microsoft Power Point is a proprietary format, there is no simple way to make it not PowerPoint.
Those with Windows can download a free Power Point Viewer directly from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=428d5727-43ab-4f24-90b7-a94784af71a4&displaylang=en
Mac users are out of luck however, if you happen to have a pdf creator like the full version of Acrobat (not the reader), you can convert your Power Point to a pdf but be aware it will be a big pdf. You can optimize it after conversion though. That is the simplest option I can think of.
You could capture each screen as a graphic and put them in a zip folder.
It might be best to just manually convert the Power Point to html then it could be placed online for reference and could be viewed by anyone with access to any sort of modern browser.
If someone needed this done I might volunteer my time for it. WIsearcher

11/09/2006 at 11:43 pm #1766005Thanks for sharing your powerpoint. I learned a lot of new things about geocaching by watching it. By the way, who are the Packers? I plan to share the PP with others.

Some of those photos are mine and slides are based on my PowerPoint, but that’s not a problem for me! I borrowed some images and content when I created mine. As long as you’re putting out helpful, valid information that supports geocaching, go for it!
