There are many many GPS units available from $60 to $600 depending on the features you want. I suggest buying one that is 1. Accurate 2. Has a good compass feature 3. is waterproof 4. is shock resistant

After you buy the unit, go to http://www.geocaching.com, click the link that reads “Hide or Seek a cache” put in your zip code or home coordinates if you know them, and click search. This will bring up a listing of all caches in your immediate area. Then, go find them.

The easiest way to get started is just to do it. I would recommend that you start off by buying a Garmin Etrex (you can get one for around $80 on sale) which will serve you will until you decide you want something more elaborate. (This unit is waterproof, durable, and as accurate as any GPS.) Then, log on to geocaching.com, search on your zip code, and go find some caches. (Oh, and you should probably read the GPS instructions to learn how to use it!) When I did a search on Norwalk, there were 80 caches within a 25 mile radius.

Another feature that you will want on A GPSr is being able to hook up to a PC to download way points. I was starting to get carpel tunnel syndrome from all the punching in of the numbers before I bought the cord.

I was given an Etrex almost a year ago and have done pretty well. Just wish it had maps. But, that makes it quite fun driving around the block u-turns, unknown roads, and my wife trying to tell me I don’t know where I am going. And I say yes I do right there the chest on the screen.

    Have Fun
