Well this is my first posting on the WGA Forum. Some of you have met me and my family but not many. We cache mostly in the southeastern part of the state, but we also get out into other areas. I am interested in finding a list of the oldest caches in the state, that are still open. If any of you know of such a list I would be interested in seeing it. If not I would be happy to take any submissions you might have, with the goal of creating a list. I have seen caches that go as far back as may of 2000. I have also visited some from the 2001/2002 era. I would like to visit some other “historic” caches and see if I could find out what the oldest cache in the state is. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.
Slough Gundy and Willow Dam are two of the oldest near my home (though I haven’t been to either). Neat idea, though! I think a list of the oldest actives would be fun to see. 🙂

Glad you are interested in going old school. The oldest still-active cache in the state is Pike Powder Hike (GC3B1) which was hidden in March 2001. There was even an article of the month written about it:

You can find old caches by running a Pocket Query for the area you are interested in, bringing it into GSAK, and sorting by placed date. Anything with only 3 digits (not 4) after the GC in the waypoint code is going to be from July 2001 or earlier.
Unofficially, this is the top ten list of the oldest caches in WI (I may have missed some… I’m sure you guys will let me know where I messed up ;)):

Wild Goose Chase (GC515)
Family Bicycling Virtual Cache (GC610)
River Cache (GC611)
Black River SF Cache (GC615)

Monches Redemption (GC69E)I’ve found all but one of these… I’d say that you would not be disappointed by any one of them on the list, and some of my all time favorite geocaches (Pike Powder Hike, River Cache, Black River SF Cache) are listed.
Go here http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?state_id=50 [lists all Wisconsin caches] then go to the last page on the listing. that will take you to the oldest in the state.
Have to agree with Jeremy. I keep an oldest caches query on idle, pulling everything before the end of ’01. I keep putting it to the back burner, but have had intentions of doin all of the oldest.
That is quite a list already. Thanks to all for the information. I will try to start going to some of these. Cacheing is always more interesting when you have interesting goals. I would be interested in any other suggestions.
