Just in case you are not one of the 93 people watching this cache, today the Lil Otter archived The Gauntlet… Let The Games Begin!! (GCHZKB). This famous cache won Cache of the Month, Cache of the Year in 2005, and probably is responsible for bringing more cachers together and more discussion and planning than any other cache in WI.

It’s time to say a sad “good-bye” to the Gauntlet. It was “outed” and I figure before it gets a Rash of “hits”.. I’d let it fade away.. Hopefully the memories made will last a good long time. I’ve had the BEST and WORST of times because of this cache. I wish to THANK all that enjoyed the comradery behind this cache and I’ve so enjoyed all the logs, friendships and mini events that this cache had created. Hopefully a “Gauntlet Survivors” reunion can happen sometime..

    Have a wondrous Holiday season..

Thanks for all the fun Lorrie. I did this cache twice, and was looking forward to coming back with another big group in the summer of 2007. It is really unfortunate that the cache was ruined after surviving so long, gaining so much notoriety, fostering so much comradery, and providing hundreds people with so much enjoyment… this is what happens when too many people get involved (especially people from out of state ;)) in this sport that take things way too seriously.

And I’m hoping for another batch of challenging and creative Lil Otter caches in Central Wisconsin now that she doesn’t have to babysit this one… it is on my Christmas list (right below a world peace and right above a pony :)), and since I was a good boy I’m banking on Santa fulfilling my request…

Ummm…I don’t think we can blame this one on someone from out of state…..

I agree…but it will be missed none the less.

I also am sad to see this cache end. I was planning on going back in 2007. To maybe do a one-year reunion. I met some super people at this event. And made a new friends that I still correspond with. It still was one of my fun challenges. YES… I still believe in Santa Clause. Thanks to Lil Otter for a fun cache.

I will also miss this one. It taught me a lot about myself while trying to conquer all the obstacles.

I also met some super people while doing this cache. Would have loved to do this one againg or Benny’s reunion. But what the heck lets make an event and just rehash the ole’ war stories.

Honestly guys, not to be a downer, but after what I heard, Im glad I didnt take the time to do it. We have a little guy who we would have had to send with grandma, and had I wasted time on a cache, when I could have spent the day hitting some of the more nearby ones, I would have been LIVID.

Theres so many great ones locally, I would have felt crappy wasting driving time when those hours could have been used more, well.. productively.

🙁 We were crushed when the cache was “outed”. It’s always been out there on gotta do sometime list. It’s too bad a few had to bring to an end what so many had clearly enjoyed. It reminds me of the holiday-icon conversation I have to have with one of my look-at-me fifth graders every year about this time.

We’re bummed we won’t ever get to gear up and conquer The Gauntlet, but proud to belong to a group that can claim one of its own conceived of such a clever and memorable cache! It’s all about the experience!

Ok, I know I’m missing it here, but what was the reason it was archived? Was it because of someone getting hurt or was it because someone decided to cut down a tree?

(shivers)… Thankfully those that did come up from IL seemed to have understood and enjoyed the experience… and didn’t make my life a living hell because they were LIVID..

Geocaching sure has been changing these last few years.. “productively” was never discussed as we all ‘chatted’ by the Gauntlet.. it was always friendship and bonding.. but I guess that doesn’t “count” for much now adays..

I have tried for the last month to not respond to personal attacks etc because of some LIVID ‘players’ hopefully they think they WON.. if all you’ve heard is just ONE side of a tale.. then it’s your loss too..

The Gauntlet was never a “TRICK” it was a way to bring so many together.. I have always been to any “gathering” that posted their intent of coming…. and NEVER ONCE did I think I was wasting my time because I didn’t earn a point.. or could be doing other things..

I’m just hoping to enjoy my holiday.. so if any have negitive comebacks.. please feel free to email me and keep it from these boards..

A cache is what a finder makes it. Some love them others hate them. That’s what makes us Human, we have the ability to form our own decisions. Personally, even though I was looking forward to a real challenge I didn’t feel cheated. I believe that if someone takes the time and effort to place a cache then they deserve credit, just for doing so. Going somewhere you’ve never been, experiencing something you’ve never done and doing so because you want to, not because you have to is what life is all about.

So what if it wasn’t what you expected. You still got to experience something that you never would have otherwise. The originality of all the logs is something you will most likely never see in most avenues of everyday life. People are quick to blame someone else when things don’t go the way they want.

The fact that Lil Otter would invite strangers to her home says something in itself. This was a way for a common thread of people to gather and share their experiences. Even though I was not able to meet Lil Otter I know that we would have shared a good laugh and lots of life experiences. So what is wrong with that??

This is just my opinion and nothing more.

Is caching about the numbers? Yes it is! For some, not for others. I get to meet and talk with a lot of cachers while out for the numbers. No problem.

I agree with CinemaBoxers. At least their feelings. I did The Gauntlet ‘knowing’ in advance, and also knowing there were plenty of other caches in the area to do. Everyone is different, and has a right to their opinion.

Lil Otter, are you going to tell the truth? I mean, reveal the secret. Ah, spill the beans? Or something like that? I think, perhaps, it’s time for the punchline.

I wish I had time to go on a group gauntlet adventure, but I didn’t. It sounded like a fun time, and from reading the logs, it sounded like a lot of people had a blast. If not all real, they portrayed having a good time.

If Jeremy went twice, it had to be good, or at least fun 🙂

Since the cache is archived, I’d also like to hear the punch line.

It looks like the cache was “outed”. The cache was never difficult. I have not done it myself 😥 but have been told it was basicly a 1 star cache at a boat launch. I read the posts on the cache page and didn’t see where it was “outed” though. I only saw one refferance to it being “noo big deal” or something like that.

So, where was it “outed”? I don’t know.

    #1767496

One friendly cacher has bookmarked it as a “liers cache”…not sure if that was the outting or not but it sure helped. 🙄

    I loved kbraband’s encrypted log from 4/16/05 🙂
