Gram & I are thinking about booking a Carribean cruise at Eastertime to celebrate our #30 anniversary. We do not have a cruise line or specific itinery picked out yet.
Having never taken a trip in anything bigger than our 16.5′ Bell canoe, we are open to suggestions.
From a geocaching point of view, are there any places down there where we can find caches without too much hassle during daytime port-of-call stops? Or absolutely terrific caches we should seriously consider?
I’ve done the searches, and have noticed there are not a lot of caches hidden in that part of the world. Some sound neat from the descriptions, but I have no idea about accessibility from the docks where the ship will be, how we’d get to the cache area, etc…
Other comments and/or advice from veteran cruisers would also be appreciated.
Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

12/25/2006 at 4:47 pm #1767675I’m not a veteran cruise affectionado (sp?), but I have gone on a couple, but not a Caribbean cruise.
In June of ’06 we went around Hawaii, Hawaii was great, Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) stunk! I would not recommend them to anyone. I can share details if your really interested.
In June of ’05 we went on an Alaskan cruise with Holland America Lines (HAL) and they were great, a terrific company to sail with! Easter time – when you want to see warm weather might not be the time to go looking at glaciers.
It seems that there are many virtual and web cam caches in the ports we sailed into.
Have fun, congrat’s on 30 years, and happy holiday’s.

12/25/2006 at 5:44 pm #1767676I took a Disney cruse there was more people without kids than people with kids and it stopped in Nassau there is a cache about 10 or 12 blocks away it is a water tower and you can go to the top of the tower in an old elevator and close by is the queens stair case its not a cache but worth taking a look at
there is an old fort about 12 blocks in the other direction it is a virtual cache very interesting there will be a local there give him a couple bucks and he will tell you the history well worth it
if you know how to ride a moped it is an OK way to get around but be careful they will run you over and not look back at the funny white peoplethen you cruse to Disney island eat a big meal on the beach and hit a couple caches it would be a long walk but there is a tram you can take to the far end of the island there was about 4 caches there
we were on anther cruse with carnival Disney was way better12/26/2006 at 2:10 am #1767677I have cruised twice in the Caribean, but both were B.C (Before Cachaholic)
The first company is out of business, and the second cruise was with Norwegiean Cruise Line. I had a different experience than Team Bear Bear. I thought NCL was a great cruise line. Great ship, great service, very good food. Good variety in ports of call.
Sailed out of Miami once and once out of New Orleans. Since air fare is a big chunk of the cost, it makes sense to check out air fares before you check out which cruise ya want to go out of. The last time I sailed, air to New Orleans was a lot cheaper than air to Miami or the other Florida ports, and New Orleans was a great place to visit. There are also sailings from Galvaston that might be cheaper to fly into.
Best port of call was Belize, and I think there are a few caches there. Belize is not quite so overrun with fakery as other ports of call, yet, and I loved the river cruise with the monkeys in the trees. The worse is Key West (Think Wisconsin Dells tackiness, on steroids, with a tan, gallons of watery drinks, and more silicone.)
When ya get back, please post a note on what ya found out. I would love to cruise and cache, and any information would be appreciated.

12/26/2006 at 4:10 am #1767678We didn’t do a cruise but we stayed on New Providence a few weeks ago and found a virtual in Nassau (actually on Paradise Island) that was in a neat place at Atlantis, not far from where the cruise ships moor.
12/26/2006 at 3:17 pm #1767679We stopped in Cozumel on our cruise and did this one GCTGGQ. If you click on “find all caches near this location” you will see Cozumel has quite a few. These caches also right now have some pretty neat coins in them. We also did a couple on our last trip to Mexico, but cruise ships don’t go where we went. Cozumel is a pretty safe bet, most ships dock there during a Caribbean cruise. Have fun! 😀
12/26/2006 at 11:32 pm #1767680we are doing eastern carribbean in march, on carnival. stopping in freeport bahamas, cayman island and costa maya. there doesn’t look to be any cache in costa maya, but freeport and caymans had some. thought we’d probably take our old gps and leave the good ones at home. don’t know how much time there would be for caches.
