What major issues do you see facing the WGA in 2007? How would you propose they be resolved?
01/19/2007 at 8:23 pm #1768671I wish I could predict the issues here at work. Then I could solve them before they actually became issues… 😉
I think one of the challenges is to increase the awareness of out existence among Wisconsin cachers. I wonder what the ratio is of WGA membership to the total number of cachers in the state?
This site is the storehouse of information for things like the DNR policy, the rules about SNAs, etc. If I didn’t know about this site, the only way I’d know about some of these rules is after I’ve already had my new cache archived. Then I get mad and quit and my cache is now geolitter.
I think we need to do more to get the WGA name out to new cachers other than just “This cache was placed by…” badges on cache pages.

I agree that the issue mentioned above by Cheesehead Dave remains an important issue. I believe that the WGA needs to do more things that service geocachers in the state to increase WGA membership, including regional events, coins, training programs, and the other things we have already talked about.
I also agree that the 5 issues mention by Team Lighteningbugs are key issues, and have previously posted my thoughts on all 5 of them. I will keep this post short and say that I essentially agree with Dave and Jennifer.

01/19/2007 at 10:38 pm #1768674There are many external issues that come to mind. But I strongly feel that the WGA’s future rests on resolving many internal issues that are lurking in the BoD closet.
The BoD has, in its earliest years, been primarily occupied with organizing two annual events. This is how the WGA began and this is how it has continued. The WGA also was able to work with the DNR to establish a working relationship and keep geocaching in WI State owned land.
The WGA Board is now in transition. The WGA needs to grow beyond being a group that holds a couple of events and represents WI geocachers to the DNR. The WGA is bursting with the desire to grow into a State wide group of geocachers, committed to sharing their resourses for the good of geocaching in WI.
The function of the board needs to move away from event planning. This is certainly something I trust our WGA members to skillfully assist with. The WGA BoD needs to meet regularily either in person or electronically. The current format of online postings only is acceptable only if no definitive action is desired (example: MAGC).
If we can tackle the problems within, the external issues will be much easier to deal with.
In September, I made several proposals to the BoD to do just these things. Unfortunately, they were met with very little response and general apathy.
I firmly believe that there needs to be internal changes made before we can function to our fullest. If you want the Board to continue to focus primarily on two events and a pancake griddle, please do not elect me to another term. If you want to see the things happen like the many things mentioned by T&tB; vote for me and support my proposed changes.
Please see my profile thread for the changes I have proposed and the rationale behind them.
01/19/2007 at 10:44 pm #1768675I think LightningBugs Mum hit the biggies. Hate to just go with the flow, but no use restating what is already posted. And as Dave states….I wish things could be predicted. I don’t see a Mega-Event really being an issue but more of an idea to build upon.
For me, the biggest issues are pleasing all the peole all the time and we all know that AIN’T gonna happen.
One issue I see is that of making sure the WGA and it’s website continues to grow. Getting more cachers to participate in WGA events, on the website and stay interested in caching. How to do that.. I am not sure, except keeping events fun, interesting and exciting and ensuring the information provided on the WGA site is current and usefull. I see no problems there so far, but always room for creative ideas!!
01/19/2007 at 10:56 pm #1768676I have several issues that I believe could be addressed by the WGA:
1) Geocaching in the State Natural areas should be allowed on a limited basis. I recently had a cache denied because it turns out the area was a SNA. That particular SNA has one of the best examples in the state for what an Earthcache should teach us. In this particular case, an existing paved path leading to the Earthcache coords would have been used.
In some instances, denial of a traditional cache in a natural setting with the typical cacher hunting damage is warranted, but a complete ban on SNA’s is not. I’d like to see the WGA address this situation.
2) I think it should be the job of the WGA to contact the various law enforcement agencies to better educate them about what geocaching is (and what it is not). I’ve run into “Barney Fife” a couple of times this year. The police departments may have been given something in passing by the FBI (or whomever) but they don’t know enough.
Perhaps a WGA Geocaching “Permit” (defined as nothing more than a geocaching sticker to put in our car window) would certainly show park rangers and police who we are and why we are driving slowly through the woods and dodging in and out of parking lots……weekly.
I’m sure the WGA could easily afford to produce WGA stickers for their members.
3) I’d like to see more geocachers become members of the WGA. There are many, many cachers who get involved in the sport/game/hobby/obsession, place a cache or two then stop. If we invited them into the group, they may stay interested and place more and better caches for us to find.
01/20/2007 at 12:00 am #1768677I agree with the above posts entirely. And as Anne States, there is absolutely no way to please everybody.
I definetely think at the forefront of the issues, is getting more Wisconsin Cachers, to be WGA members. I have cached with many people, wo do not know what the WGA is. I have also brought many nem members to the WGA.
I also beleive Education is very important, whether it be hosting Paperless Caching Classes, or public Awareness events at Fishing/hunting/Camping Shows. I beleive that this would stongly benefit the WGA, in that it would get us out there, and make us known more then we are at the present.

01/21/2007 at 3:12 am #1768678I have several ideas:
- Revisit the ban on Geocaching in SNAs and hopefully arrange for a more reasonable approach.
- Develop communications programs for law enforcement/fire departments and put together a program for regular delivery of said programs to departements throughout the state
- Develop a communications program for local parks departments.
01/23/2007 at 9:18 pm #1768679Most of them that I know of have already been mentioned.
I have covered some of them in my bio posting as well.
I’m a large proponent of paperless caching (at low cost) and have hosted afew training events and plan on more.
I think it would be great if we had window clings, stickers, patches, etc. I think we could use a revised logo though. (I know it has been mentioned before)
