How much time do you have to commit to the WGA?
I can remember when I first started as a BOD member, that the amount of time I would have to dedicate to WGA BOD would be so small I wouldn’t even notice. Sometimes that is the case, but most of the time it requires some time, and at other times it can require a lot of time (around the WGA’s two events).
There have been some BOD members that seemed to drop off the face of the planet and not check in for long (1+ months) stretches. Maybe it was work, maybe it was family, maybe it was health, maybe it was (who knows?).
Do YOU as a candidate have enough time in your schedule to give the position the time it deserves?
How often do you now check the WGA forums?
Do you have every weekend booked from now until next Christmas, or is there some breathing room in your schedule?
Do you have a job that takes you away for long periods of time? Do you often work more than 60 hours a week?
Are you already involved with 18 other organizations who are also putting demands on your time?
Thank you in advance for your responses.
01/22/2007 at 1:09 am #1768821Nobody has enough time. You know how the old saying goes – if you want something done, give it to someone who’s really busy. That’s how I categorize myself – just pile more on.
I would back off on some of my Scouting duties to serve on the WGA Board.
01/22/2007 at 2:13 am #1768822I do beleive that the time would be of no problem. I work a 40 hour week, with very little overtime. Occasionally, I do do work for a former employer, but maybe 10 hours a month or so. I do enjoy going caching on the weekends, and feel that I would have more than enough time to help out with any meetings/Get Toghethers.

01/22/2007 at 2:32 am #1768823Everyones Time is valuable for sure. I probably have more available than most.
* I work 12 hr shifts – 3 a week (36 hrs/wk…OT?? What’s that???? LOL)
* I work every 4th weekend. The other 3 I don’t make plans on til they come closer.
* When it is my weekend on, I normally work 6 days in a row than have 7 off..yup basically a vacation every other week.
* With advanced notification I can usually switch a weekend.
* I have no children, therefore no commitments on that end.
* The planning I do DO for weekends is for caching, having or attending and event, or in the summer….a week up North, but that’s flexible.
* I multi-task…so I get a lot done in a shorter period of time.
* I always MAKE time for things I enjoy! 😀As for visiting the WGA Forums.. it is usually more than once a day. The longest I have not been on here, might have been a cpl weeks, during the busy holiday season, otherwise a week to 10 days while on vacation. If one can not visit and is a BOD member… they should at least note they will be gone.. for whatever reason….always good to leave an FYI out of courtesy!! The only ohter times I may be busy with things is if another organization, such as Woodland Dunes or Adult Envirnmental Ed. requests me to do a Geocaching “Thing”.
01/22/2007 at 2:43 am #1768824Interesting point. Before I replied, I checked all the candidates and, as far as I can tell, only one of the candidates is retired. (I’m always surprised that more retired people don’t get involved in boards like this.) I think in most cases, the issue is NOT the amount of time available, but, more accurately, their willingness to commit their free time to the organization. I’m certainly willing to commit the time needed to “give something back” to the sport and the organization. I get a great deal of enjoyment from this sport and would find the time to commit as needed.
01/22/2007 at 4:40 am #1768825This is an excellent question, and thanks for bringing it up. I served on the Wisconsin EMS Association Board of Directors for several years and am well aware of how much time a voluntary position like this can take.
As to prior committments, I work 3 12 hour shifts per week, and generally have 4 days off per week. I work every third weekend, so generally cannot attend 1/3 of the events, but would get a schedule adjustment or the big 2 WGA events (assuming that is possible at the time). I do occasionally pick up extra shifts, depending on whether I need extra cash to buy fuel for my gas guzzling Explorer to go geocaching or whether I would prefer to try to go grab some FTF chances.
My daughters still live with me, but they are 23 and 18, and are pretty much potty trained now, and they dont mind if I am gone days at a time. In fact, I think they like it when I am gone for awhile–I suspect they are already looking forward to my 8 day absence starting later this week. (I think I heard the word “party.”
I would say that time is the most finite of commodities. All of us have just 168 hours per week, no less and no more. So any of us who serve on the BOD will have to adjust how we use our time if we are going to be effective. In my case, most of my discretionary time, that is time not given over to the necessary things of life, is already spent wisely, by going geocaching. 😉
And even though it is not about the numbers, I do pay attention to the numbers, and have done the math. On average, I find 3 caches/hour. I know that is low, but I include travel time in my calculation. Anyway, any time that I spend working on WGA projects will have to come from the time that I am currently spending finding caches. Therefore I can calculate that if I find 300 less caches in the coming year, I will have 100 hours to spend on WGA projects.
Anyway, there is only so much time, and I am OK with finding a few less caches in the coming year and using that time that I would have used hunting caches working on WGA projects. (I know this calculation will make Team Honeybunnies salivate because they are just dieing to pass me.)

01/22/2007 at 5:22 am #1768826In my life right now, volunteering IS my job. I spend one day a week at the wildlife center. The science fair board requires one morning a month and one weekend a year (I spend a lot more time on it, but on no set schedule – the jobs get done whenever I need to get them done). My kids have activities a lot on weekends, but I can work around that when needed. I also donate some of my time to my religious organization during the year. But again nothing I can’t work around. As I mentioned somewhere else, my obligation as Pack Committee Chair and Assistant Den Leader for my son’s cub scout pack ends next month, so I see no problem with my picking up a new responsibility at this time.
I usually visit the forums once or twice a day. If I’m traveling or camping, I often take a much-needed break from the computer during that time. But I’m never gone for more than a week – almost always it’s about 4 days that I am away. And that occurs about once a month.
01/22/2007 at 2:06 pm #1768827I work a M-F 40 hrs/wk job. My weekends are occasionally booked with family events, but rarely so far in advance that I can’t plan other things in there as well. I check the WGA forums 1-2 times per day during the week, and occasionally on weekends, especially if I’m logging caches and am already in front of the computer.
01/22/2007 at 10:53 pm #1768828I have done some rearranging in my schedule primarily because my time was stretched thin over too many areas. I’ve given up several things (teaching Lifeguarding and volunteering at the Red Cross) while I’ve taken on other things (new business venture) and I’ve repositioned other things (taken different responsibilities at church and on school board).
I made some hard decisions and was not even sure if I would run for the board again. I have instead made the decision to put this organization at the front as a priority because of how much geocaching has given to me and my family and because of all the fine, fine people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made.
I thoroughly agree that there needs to be a commitment from each board member to put time and energy into this venture. If the work is going to get done, that will be the only way.
01/23/2007 at 9:42 pm #1768829I made sure to read what the time requirements were going to be before accepting the initial nomination. While I work full time, I do make the time to check in on the forums here. Having broadband connection at home allows me to easily keep up with the messages.
01/25/2007 at 12:57 am #1768830I have lots of time available. I work 2nd shift, so I have all morning to goof around on the computer, I mean work on board business. I typically check into the forums 10+ times a day.
My biggest obstacle is my off day schedule. Off days on weekends only come around every 3 or 4 months. Luckily the campouts and picnics are on or near my off days.
People shouldn’t be frightened to run for election based on their available time. If you read these forums on a daily basis, you probably are able to devote enough time to the WGA. From time to time, the board gets busy planning events. During busy periods, you might need to spend more hours a week on the forums. The main thing is being able to read the BOD forums and be available to vote in a timely manner.
Between being a Board Member and a volunteer reviewer, I’ve spent thousands of hours on WGA business. This is WAY above what is expected of Board Members. I say that because it wouldn’t be expected of new BOD’s. It’s just a daily part of my life 🙂
01/25/2007 at 11:41 am #1768831This issue is a very critical one. I look forward to seeing a better director than I replace me, as I believe every exiting director should. This is what will give strength and vitality to this organization.
I want to see a real passion for this job in our candidates. I look for it here and [HINT] in the candidates profiles on the BOD Election page [4th from the top at the left]. When I see a candidate visiting these forums daily, I am pleased. When a candidate visits reach 4, 5, 6 or more days apart, I am not going to give that candidate serious consideration. I do not take it lightly when a member of the BOD misses serious issues because he/she just didn’t get around to visiting the WGA website.
01/25/2007 at 3:01 pm #1768832Where do you see last visits here? or do you just mean postings? Some may visit frequently but not frequently post.

The last time someone visited the WGA site is available in their WGA user profile, on the User Info tab.
Some notes on this last visit information. First, users can choose to hide their last visit date/time and make themselves invisible (not shown in the list of online users). See the “Publish my online status” option under Your Account -> Preferences.
Second, sometimes it is not 100% accurate. Certain actions, such as just viewing the WGA home page (but not the forum index page) do not cause this time to be updated. And the last visit time is not updated until someone logs off or their session times out, so if they are currently online or have been online recently, the last visit time reflects the time of their second-to-last (previous session before this one) visit.
01/26/2007 at 7:38 pm #1768834For the most part, I would have to say YES I have enough time. Work is usually prity slow and puter work seems to be a big part of it. I can’t say that I will be on WGA every day. Sometimes Work will be up to my elbows. For the most part, I am a night owl and seem to be up late at night. I have internet at work, home and parents house. Plus I would be able to give out home # and texting # just in case there is somone that needs somthing. I would say that there are a lot of cachers that have my home # allready. I enjoy working on the puter so I would do everything in my powers to try and get online at least once a day….
