This is a new experience for me … my most recent hide ( GC10BD4 ) is on private property … a listed the owner of the property’s name on the cache listing. This past weekend, the owner of a property got called by a geocacher (a young boy) that looked up the phone number of the owner, to ask him some questions about the hide. While the owner of the property didn’t care and thought it was funny … he didn’t give out any information, because he didn’t want to spoil anything (I taught him well).
What makes this really odd, I don’t see any need to “prepare” for finding this cache, so I don’t see any reason to check on it in advance.
I’ve since changed the listing to just be the owner’s last initial, rather than his full name. My idea, not his request.

01/23/2007 at 2:48 am #1768890I have not been real comfortable with this either. I was asked to post first name and last initial of the property owner for one of our caches, and so far the owner has been id’d by three or four different cachers. This has not caused a problem yet, but it has raised some concerns.
I am not sure that publically identifying property owners on an open website is a good idea. Hopefully this permission issue can be accomplished in a different way. When it is, I’ll edit my listing.

Just a thought on it.
01/23/2007 at 11:30 pm #1768892Its pretty easy to find out who owns a particular piece of property by contacting the local town board /assessor. All this information is public, and many localities have this available online. Maybe putting the person’s name would make it a bit easier, but as long as they own property, they can be found. Its probably best that, if you hide on private property, you warn the owner that someone may call them on the phone or knock on the door asking about the cache.
