It’s no secret I’m watching the race for COTY pretty close because I have my cache Match Head in the running.
My toughest competitor has been and still is Gandy Dancer Gordon Sumner, who is also currently in the lead.
OK, so the obvious set aside, of course I want to win. Who wouldn’t? I don’t want to come off as the potential sore loser, but by making this post I’ve opened myself up to that.
I decided a few days back to read the posts of my competitors cache. It really seems like a great cache, and I think I’m going to make a camping trip up to the area this summer just to check it out. Well that and many other cache in the area too (can’t just do one). While reading the logs I noticed there had only been 16 visits to this cache, but it has 14 votes for COTY so I did a little research. Of the 16 visitors to the cache so far I could only find that 5 of them are registered at WGA. That being said, where did all the votes come from?
I of course realize this is an open vote and anyone can vote for any cache. So my question is to all of you that voted for the cache you never tried. Why do you think it deserves cache of the year if you never tried it?
Thanks in advance, I’m wearing full football gear for the beating I’m about to take. 😀 [/url]
01/29/2007 at 4:27 pm #1769365I firmly believe that unless you have visited the cache you have no business voting for it. But then again COTM seems pointless to me as there is no way to get meaningful votes for caches on an apple to apple basis.
(I hope you have some gear left over for me to wear as I bruise easily of late.)
01/29/2007 at 4:40 pm #1769366Yes, we are aware of some issues with votes at this point. I was going to address this a little later, but will do so now.
People should realize that when you place a vote we see your ISP address, as well as other information that tells us who placed the vote and at what time. Those that think they are cheating the system are NOT. These votes will be removed, and the accounts will be disabled.
The fraud is being perpetrated by a small number of people. I will not name any names. I am pretty disappointed though.
Please know that votes for board of directors will be closely scrutinized!

Are you talking about OP- COTY voting , or voting for the board?
I assume you mean COTY. . . just want to clarify since your post mentions BOD elections
01/29/2007 at 7:31 pm #1769368Currently I mean Cache of the Year voting, but those overseeing voting are able to view votes placed, time placed, sock and all sort of other fun stuff (any voting that goes on here).
And I want to clarify — votes are not being removed because the person hasn’t visited the cache. There is no rule stating that you must visit a cache before you can vote for it. The votes being deleted are those which are sock puppet account created by existing members solely for the purpose of placing more votes.
The removal of votes is not done willy-nilly either. There is a some investigative work done before they are removed to weed out variables.
The 4 votes that have been removed have been determined to be sock puppet accounts. If those placing the removed votes dispute this action, they can PM me about it.
I want to thank everyone else for their participation in Cache of the Month and Cache of the Year. This has been a banner year — lots of nominees and lots of voting. This just shows how much you all care about geocaching in Wisconsin!

01/29/2007 at 10:45 pm #1769369I hope you don’t remove my vote. If you do, the cache I voted for won’t have any votes…. Oops, so much for my secret ballot….
01/29/2007 at 10:47 pm #1769370We are the owners of Gandy Dancer — Gordon Sumner. We have placed 2 votes for this cache, one for us and one for our nephews(The Geo Nephews). We would love to win this honor, but we want to do it fair and square!!!!!! So everyone let’s remember caching is supposed to be about fun not POLITICS. I hope no one cheats for any cache.
KEEP ON CACHING AND HAVE FUN!
We hope to make it around more of the state and checkout alot of the previous winners. Especially Match Head!

Bec01/30/2007 at 2:34 am #1769372there is a few geocachers that will go visit a cache and not post it on the web or sign the log that they found it.
but not me it is all about the Numbers for me01/30/2007 at 2:41 am #1769373@shrek & fiona wrote:

but not me it is all about the Numbers for meGood point … actually this is happen a lot (at least in my area) … I’ve recently replaced a couple full log sheets. I’d say about 1/4 the entries on the paper logs sheets were never logged on the GC website.
In fact, in one case I got word that one of my log sheets was full and I was confused because the cache was somewhat new and didn’t seem to have enough “finds” on GC to be full … but sure enough, it was filled up with legit geo-names that never logged on the GC site.

I was in the running last year for BOD. I asked the same question, as I was asked about my availablility for the meeting. I inquired if they knew something I didn’t and I was told “NOPE… just asking for availalbility is all, to aquire a date when most people were available.” Nobody knows nuthin’ til the end on the BOD voting. I THINK I was told that the tallying is done by an outside source.
Please… someone correct me if I am wrong though.
01/30/2007 at 6:04 pm #1769376The tallying is done by WGA members. The 3 folks doing this year are not up for board election.
And they have had electrodes attached to body parts to prevent any possibility of cheating!
But in all seriousness — I want to thank them for the huge undertaking they have volunteered for!

BecIf you need 4th from outside the BOD I’d gladly get hooked up to electrodes as well…all I do is prowl the boards anyway; it would give me something to do…..It’s too cold for Geocaching and that blasted white stuff gets in the way.
02/03/2007 at 4:23 pm #1769378Correct me if I’m wrong but, I thought you were NOT suppose to vote for yourself. I hope you have some gear left for me too lol!!! 🙂
