I’ve been attaching my Garmin GPS unit to my belt and pushing all sorts of buttons, but for the life of me I cannot make it turn me into a superhero. I need to be prepared in case I ever run into Maposaurus while I’m out geocaching! Can anybody help me out?! 🙂
(If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out Garmin’s Superbowl ad. It’s posted at http://www.garmin.com. Click “The Battle Continues” in the corner of the front page pic.)
02/05/2007 at 3:23 pm #1769715I know exactly what you are talking about. How3ever I have not found that button either. 🙁 I even tried my friend Nuvie. I am still a tech at a desk, instead of a super hero fighting a map.

Seriously, as a Garmin stock owner this seems like a waste of $2.6 million. Did people really understand what they were seeing, especially people who barely know what a GPS is? I’m sure they did all kinds of market testing, but it was probably one of the dumbest commercials during the Super Bowl. And this panel of advertising folks agrees:
The panel scored Garmin the lowest in Super Bowl Ads.
Maybe they should have shown someone talking to their GPS while driving in the middle of nowhere (see this topic) to highlight the fact that this little device will give you directions anywhere… you simply cannot get lost. Or held an ad contest… whatever amateurs came up with couldn’t be much worse than what they had.
02/05/2007 at 4:39 pm #1769717How do I get a blue monster-killing death ray!?! I’m willing to stock up on batteries.
I don’t think it was THE dumbest comercial of the night. The Sheryl Crow hair coloring one was pretty awful. I agree the Garmin ad probably didn’t fulfill its purpose. I liked it, but I already know what a GPS is. If I didn’t, I probably would have scratched my head and said, “Huh? Is there a Power Rangers movie coming out?”
Garmin IS having an ad contest (well sort of):
The concept is pretty simple though… make a YouTube(TM) video spoofing our Super Bowl commercial or Super Bowl music video. Your YouTube video should illustrate your “Inner Garmin Man” or how you fight your personal “Driving Demons.” An expert panel, led by our pal Chet, will choose the winner (and nuvi 660 recipient) on March 1, 2007.
