We may need to rename the forums to “Should I buy the Garmin 60cx or 60csx.”
To be honest I would get the 60cx as the 60csx seems like overkill and doesn’t add a whole lot of functionality. I do however recommend getting a larger Micro SD card no matter what you choose; a one or two gig card would be plenty (and they are pretty inexpensive as well).

03/01/2007 at 9:01 pm #1770975I like the electronic compass feature of my 60CSx. When my son does a new “goto” at the same time as myself he’ll often start out in the wrong direction until his Legend (no electronic compass) gets its bearings and swings around- sometimes the opposite direction. This is an even bigger pain if you’re in the car and start out the wrong way. With the electronic compass my 60CSx is pointing me in the right direction without my moving at all. Perhaps if you’re not a “follow the little arrow” type this wouldn’t be a problem.
Some folks will say things like “you’ll know who has an electronic compass because they’ll be turning circles calibrating the thing”. You don’t have to turn circles- only the GPSr does. Set it in your palm, turn it two times around- you’re good to go. Mine doesn’t seem to need calibration very often either.
Divide the additional cost over the five years I expect to be using this GPSr and it was worth it to me. It may not be for you?
Hope this helps.

Hope this helps.Yep, One Paddle short makes a valid point about the electronic compass though I always used my Garmin Vista with the compass turned off and had no problems.
I was one of those who spun in a circle the first couple of times I needed to calibrate the compass 😳

I tried OPS’s technique, but the hair on my palms kepts getting snagged in the GPS. 😳
03/01/2007 at 9:53 pm #1770978I purchased the CSX. But then again I liked the extra gadgets.LOL I think either will suit your needs. You just have to ask yourself what do you want out of it. I personally saw that with the rebate it was the same or cheaper to get the csx over the cx. Now the bad news after ordering and before getting the rebate ended so I couldn’t take advantage. Such is life I guess. I love the compass feature and haven’t found it to be too much of a problem.
Here I am babbling again. Whatever you decide get the bigger MicroSD card. You’ll be happy you did. Just for fun on my 1 gig card I fit all the maps for the US and Canada. Now I don’t have to reload the maps at all. Unless I get TOPO soon.

And then think about donating that small card to the Scout GPSr units that Mathman mentions in another thread. I’m working with him on getting these set up and I have three of them with working cards sitting here on my desk thanks to kind and generous members of the WGA (myself included 😀 ). We were both a little surprised to find these eTrex Venture Cx units come with no internal map memory at all. We’ve set up a 20 cache GPS course for a Venture crew and they’ll be the first to get a chance to try these new units in a couple of weeks. With the snow coming down like it is right now though some of these are going to be a little more difficult to find than we intended…
But that’ll just make it more fun.
And, just to be honest- I turned a few circles years back with my Summit before I realized that when the directions said to turn slowly in a circle I didn’t need to take it personally.
