Just curious here. We’re pretty casual cachers and enjoy this for the discovery of new hiking trails or lovely outdoor spots, but we also enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Most days we go out, we might find 1-4 caches, but our record was 8 in a day. These weren’t hike ones, obviously.
I know some of you are machines! What is the largest number you’ve found in a day’s searching, not including event caches?
03/19/2007 at 2:58 pm #1871704My most thus far is 18 finds and 4 DNFs
03/19/2007 at 3:15 pm #1871705105, doing the BoB series down in northern Chicagoland.
(Did 115 for the Hwy 100-100 event).
A good, average day would be 25-40. Depending on far we need to drive, weather, etc.
For some people, 3-5 in one day is great, and perhaps the most they will every do. That’s fine. It’s a wide open sport, where everyone has the choice of what to do.
When I started, I thought 5 in one day was fantastic. Then, we went down to Phoenix, and did 17 in one day! Wow!!! How can you top that!
(BTW, it took over a year to get to 100 caches).03/19/2007 at 3:16 pm #1871706116, on 3/18/06 (one year ago yesterday) with Team Honeybunnies and WI Robin. 97 of those were the BoB’s that are drive ups, and take about 4 hours for all 97. There are 99 total, but 2 were down that day.
Because I have to drive to get to the first cache, I like to make a day of it, and cache all day when I cache, and like to get 20 or so a day.

03/19/2007 at 3:47 pm #1871707I think mine is 44ish, but I have several days in the 30s as well; I don’t log temps. 😉
But that said when I started 6 in one day would have been a big day for me. Two things have changed since then:
1…there are WAY more caches now and
2…using a new GPS with autorouting makes multiple finds MUCH easier to navigate to (more time spent caching and less time driving around trying to get to the cache location).03/19/2007 at 4:58 pm #1871708108 doing the BoB series.
52 doing “regular” caches.03/19/2007 at 5:09 pm #1871709Zuma,
I imagine that whenever we get past the caches in our immediate area, we’ll do the same. I don’t like to do lots of random trips, anyway. Ms. “Live Green” here and all that.
However, at the rate people are planting them around here, that may never happen. There were two more new ones this morning! I think in just the past week, about 10 new ones have popped up. I finally figured out what I want to do for our first one, but still am pondering just the right spot to place it.
03/19/2007 at 5:31 pm #1871710The most we have done in one day is 39. We did that last year when we were in the Milwaukee area to see the Pistons play the Bucks in the playoffs. That day we only cached from 8AM to 4PM or so, because we had to get ready for the game. Looking back, we would have had no trouble getting to 50 if we would have cached all day.
I remember when we first started, we tried and tried to do 20 in a day and just couldn’t do it. The best we could do for a long time was 17. Then once we broke 20 for the first time we started doing it pretty frequently. After a certain point of experience caching, we were able to start locating the caches much quicker once we arrived at the spot and were able to do more caches in a day.
03/19/2007 at 7:20 pm #1871711You know, it’s funny. I think our top day is around 30, but, for me, those big number days are less memorable than days where we do something difficult. Saturday, we did 18 with a group, but most of the memories will come from hunting a very difficult puzzle based multi, another multi where we were splashing through a flooded area, a couple very difficult micros, and the event we attended after the hunt. Travel bug hotels, micros in lamposts, tupperwares under a pine tree, and other generic type of caches (we found all of these also) tend to get approached with a “Find it, log it, forget it” mentality, whether we intend to or not. Of course, the company present can make finding a very dull cache interesting, but a challenging, clever, or well placed cache is much more memorable.
I guess what I am trying to say is, while it is somewhat about the numbers, you won’t remember much about hunting a film can in a tree in a neighborhood park, even though you can knock out 3 or 4 of these in an hour. You will remember a 2 mile hike through a marsh, a 200 foot ascent up a pine tree, a diabolical micro that took 3 visits to find, a beautiful vista at the end of the long climb, or even a puzzle that took you a couple weeks to work out the solution. Don’t be afraid to attempt those 4 star difficulties or terrains. The numbers will take care of themselves.
03/19/2007 at 7:42 pm #1871712the most i have ever found in a day is 47 something…
But K0RPL and I have been thinking of doing a Power Caching.. 24 hours straight of pure caching.. i heard about this on Podcaching and told justin about it and thought it would be interesting to do..
But i do agree when i do the high number days i barely remember the caches i do unless something interesting happen there.. I actually like to do the hiking caches as its pretty and fun.. I do think the best is when you cache in a group as there is nothing better Its fun cuz things happen or is said that just make it all the best!
03/19/2007 at 10:21 pm #1871713Deejay, you did not mention Geocaching School! How could you forget that day!?
03/19/2007 at 10:34 pm #1871714My best day thus far is 27.
25 of those were BoB’s and took around 1 1/2 to 2 hours. My best day besides that I think is 20 in like 6 hours with an 8 yr. old in tow. Last Saturday I hit 18 with a great group of cachers and an event (only one log) to round off the day.Hunting with a group is great fun and makes for a memorable day. Everybody at one time or another gets the find so everyone shares in the excitement.
My most memorable day thus far was the day I got 9 FTF’s in 1 hour and 27 minutes in Kenosha. That was alot of fun. Being the first to sign so many empty logs in one day. I don’t expect that will ever happen again. Right place, right time as they say.
03/19/2007 at 10:53 pm #1871715For me, including temp caches, which I no longer count: 51 twice. One was during one of the days of The Highway 100/100 event the summer before last, which actually had 117 finds that a number of people netted in one day. Without temp caches, or just straight up caching, invert those numbers and 15 is my tops. I usually go for 4-8 on a run as the norm, as I normally call it quits after about a couple of hours, or after I get my ‘fix’.
03/20/2007 at 12:09 am #1871716Our average day of caching was between 10-15 per/day. After getting my Streetpilot it jumped to 15-20 per/day depending how much driving was involved. My all time best day was 40.That was with Fu and BQ.
03/20/2007 at 1:37 am #1871717When I go caching, my goal is to NOT find more than about 6-8 caches. There could be exceptions to this rule, but seriously, I want my geocaching to involve some nice hikes or jogs, and to take me to new areas that I would like to explore. My best caching day involved ONE find. I found the cache, and hiked the area for about 4 hours after. The other caches I had planned for the day waited for another day 🙂
Although I certainly don’t mind hitting a few park’n’grabs located on the way to some more serious caches, my sincere hope on any day I decide to go geocaching is that my hunts are interesting enough that I remember each individual one… for a long time. This is why I would consider a 20, 30, 50, or 100 cache day to be a complete and utter failure.
