Okay, a little background. In addition to teaching, I’m also a professional storyteller. On two of the arts board rosters, there is a special category for “chatauqua” programs. These are ones where the performer takes on the persona of a historical character. Those are good programs to offer, because so many schools seem to be able to come up with $$$$ to pay for them. I had been researching a female riverboat captain said to haunt the Delta Queen until I learned a teller downriver does something with that. So I kind of let that notion go, until……
Somehow I crept beyond the 50 mile radius for my coords and discovered one of sloughfoot’s caches in the Dells. GCZ1NQ Confederate Spy.
Well, I have been reading all about this lady, have ordered her first person narrative, bookmarked all kinds of sites and will follow some more leads for research. Well, and make the clothes, it’s all about the clothes, right? 😉
I also noticed a geocoin at a cache in Winona with a Confederate flag. Trekkin and I are going to Switchback’s show at the Blue Heron up there on Friday, so maybe we can do that cache and grab that coin. I’d like to move it to LaBelle Rebel’s gravesite over spring break.
So thanks to sloughfoot for placing this cache I haven’t even visited yet…but I will!
Has anyone else discovered a new passion as a result of geocaching?

Yup. Her name is Mary. Well, I didn’t actually “discover” her because of geocaching, but our second date was a day of geocaching followed by dinner, and I discovered she enjoyed geocaching, so I discovered I had a winner.

Second, I didn’t really discover a ‘passion’, but I did discover something new about myself. All my life I’ve HATED history. Did everything possible to avoid the classes and learned just enough to pass tests and forgot the info immediately after.
Then while geocaching, I’ve noticed “Brown Signs”, those historical narrative markers all over usually found at many virtual caches, roadside caches, or on the way to caches. I’ve really enjoyed reading them and learning historical tidbits about the area. They are short enough for my ADD-like attention span, but I really read and remember them. Now even when we’re driving somewhere, not geocaching, you’ll hear me yell “brown sign” and Bill knows to pull over so I can read the info.

But….. but … but Ken, we’ve cached ummm geocached together several times and …. and … -sniff- … -sob-
03/24/2007 at 3:17 pm #1871969You have a great blog. Thanks for sharing it. I am a newbie to this geocaching community too. I was obsessed with geocaching in the beginning. Looking for caches that sounded interesting, involved a walk, or involved a person or history. There seems to be a synchronicity with the caches I’ve been too. But back to your topic. Actually, birding. I need to go purchase some equipment and I fell into another blog via geocaching. I am gathering information on this possible new obsession, which can be done while geocaching. Also, when you get your story together for Belle can you PM me or let us know if you are going to present it in a public setting, I mentioned it to my mom and I would love to take her to see you perform part of our family history. Safe Travels. Carol
