❓ I have an idea for a multi stage puzzle cache. I would like to have historic or old or family cemeteries as part of the puzzle. Can you get permission to go to these very old places? Who would you ask I wonder. And what about family cemeteries? Thanks in advance. Pam

I was thinking about putting something at Nathan Smith’s gravestone in the Hamilton Cemetery here. I know one of the members of the cemetery board, so I was going to ask her. If you were thinking of including that one, go for it. I can give you the name of the contact person; she’s a bank president in town, so easy to find!I think cemeteries generally have governing boards, but I’m not sure how you’d track them down. I just happen to know about this one because of a connection at church.

With the pending legislation in South Carolina that would criminalize geocaches in cemeteries, we are taking a closer look at all caches located in cemeteries. While the guidelines still permit them, we want to make sure that they not placed in a manner that will reflect poorly on our sport.
Caches should not be on, or near graves. If its an active cemetery, its best to place them on the fringes of the cemetery where searchers are unlikely to encounter mourners.
Its also a good idea to place it in a manner where people will not be required to walk over graves.Of course its always best if you obtain permission. For cemeteries that are private property, this is required.
Cemetery caches are controversial in some quarters and we need to be as sensitive as possible when placing these caches. We do not want to give any more state’s legislatures a reason to look at this issue.
Here’s some discussion about what is happening down in South Carolina:

If you want to have cachers stop by a certain grave site and get numbers off the stone for a multi-cache, I think that would work. I have done one that has done just this. The final cache was close by the fence.
03/27/2007 at 11:58 pm #1872224Being on our Town Board, everything involving our old Town Cemetery would have to go thru that board. The Village also has a Board, so everything involving the Village Cemetery goes thru them, although I know a cache has been placed there but no permission is suggested in the cache page. So that may be something the new board should look in to. Posting on the cache page who is granting permission to place caches at cemeteries or are they being placed outside of or on the edge of the cemetery on private property without Town, Village or private party permission. I could see this as being a problem if one is not asking permission first.
