Your WGA Board has decided to make it a goal of the WGA, to give back to the Parks and Forests that we all play in. As part of this effort; the WGA Campout Committee, in cooperation with the Friends of Hartman Creek State Park, will be hosting Garlic Mustard Pulling outings on Saturday Afternoon.

Volunteer Naturalist, Sue Eiler, will be working with several small groups to help clear areas of the park in the West and South of the invasive plant, Garlic Mustard. We will have signup available at registration on Saturday Morning. Small Groups will meet at 1:00pm, 2:15pm and 3:30pm for a brief introduction to Garlic Mustard and instructions in how to safely and effectively remove it from the ground. Sue will be spending the afternoon assisting with the Garlic Mustard Pulling, then will make a brief presentation at our 5:00pm Gathering.

Please consider giving just an hour of your time to help keep our playgrounds in great shape for years to come!

If you don’t have garlic mustard in your part of the state, you soon will. This plant is pretty amazing. I have seen it poke up *through* the snow in places. It often is the first thing green in the spring and then it blocks out all of the native plants.

This would be a great time to learn something about it and how best to control it, all while helping out the park.

One “good” thing that garlic mustard has going for it is that it’s not too difficult to pull out of the ground. Also, the leaves and stems are not toxic to the skin, so most people shouldn’t get a rash from pulling the stuff. However, a pair of work gloves will definately come in handy.

This is a great opportunity for us to look good with the DNR. They were excited about the WGA helping with a service project of some type. When they suggested a garlic mustard pull, we said we’d help.

I did my share of pulling at home last week. It was easy and painless. Gloves are helpful.

Hopefully we can get a good showing of cachers willing to take some time out to help the park 🙂

Our team will not be pulling the garlic mustard due to allergies. But I do have a dozen work gloves I can donate. Who is heading up this project?

Thank you very much for thinking of this. You can bring them along to registration on Saturday. I will be there soliciting volunteers for Operation Garlic Mustard. We certainly appreciate your donation.

GeoPink (Jeff), is heading up the Garlic signup.

I too am allergic to yard work 😉

We will be there. I think my kids actually prefer pulling garlic mustard to finding caches:
