528 feet or .10 of a mile is the magic number for how close caches can be together. Well I found a tool on my GPSr that I never used and am not sure if it on all other GPSr or not. How many use their Proximity Alarm function. Even thou we have a vast amount of open land in this area to place a cache, we have only a few parks. One park has a series of hiking and ski trails. There are 2 caches placed there already.
Well I’m working on something and trying to figure out how to place it with out over lapping the other 2 because those 2 a very close to each other.
What I did as I took the 2 locations and set up a .1 proximity alarm around them. They show up with a red circle.
As I was walking the trail which winds around, a alarm would go off telling me when I entered the area and when I left the .1 mile area.
I just thought that this was a pretty cool tool and want to share it.
Or I am just REALLLLLLLL slow and everyone else knows about this already.05/20/2007 at 7:23 pm #1874614Never heard of this function. Wonder if our GPSr has it. Cool feature and very helpful in placing caches. Thanks for sharing.

Same here….I knew it was there but just used the “feet away” readout when placing caches in proximity to others…

What type of GPS do you use?

I use a Garmin Etrex Legend.
05/21/2007 at 4:34 pm #1874619The Garmin GPSMap 60csx has the Proximity alarms feature too. I just checked it out and will remember to use it the next time I place a cache.
Thanks for the idea!
05/21/2007 at 6:15 pm #1874620Magellans have this feature too, well at least the Meridian Color does and I assume all meridians do then too. I’ve had mice set to 100 feet sisnce I found the feature about a week after purchasing it. If i decide to use a a hint on a cache, this feature really stands out. When I get to 100 feet from a cache, the alarm goes off and displays whatever was written in the comment section of the GPS’r or in Easy GPS.
Great feature though I never thought to use it on placements. Thanks for the idea.
05/21/2007 at 6:25 pm #1874621I have used the Proximity alerts and really like how they work, its just to bad my 60cx & vista CX only allows 10waypoints to use this feature.
It’s also nice because you get an alert when entering/leaving the proximity even if your not going to the waypoint your near. I also really like the dotted red proximity circle shown on the map screen around the waypoint.
These proximity alerts shouldn’t be confused with the proximity alarms you get when going to a waypoint, as far as I have found there is no way to adjust when the random waypoint arrival alert goes off on the garmin gps units. (maybe someone here knows how, I know my magellan and lowrance GPSr had this setting)
