I’m currently wanting to upgrade from a explorist 100. Looking at the garmin venture cx. I dont want to break the bank but want something with more features. I’m getting really tired of loading each coord by hand. So download ability is a must. I just have some cold feet about dropping the $ on a gps’r I know very little about so any info will help. I’d like to pull the trigger this weekend and get one. Thanks.

If you like the way your explorist 100 works, look into a the higher explorist models. I too started out with a 100, and am currently using an explorist 600xl. That is truly a very good top of the line GPS with a HUGE color screen, and extremely accurate. The regular 600 is a great model, and can be loaded with maps from Magellan. Look closely at the features you want, decide and enjoy. Just my 2 cents.

    bnb

If the only thing that is bothering you is download capability, there are many inexpensive GPSrs that can do that. Even the cheapest yellow Garmin eTrex can do that.

bnb is right, but be careful. I believe the cheapest explorist that you can download to is the 210. You can download to all the Garmin etrex models, but the plain yellow one does not come with a cable and you can only buy a serial (non-USB) cable, so if your computer doesn’t have a serial port, you have to go through some rigamarole to convert to serial from USB. You can pick up a third party cable for the etrex for around $10 on eBay. I believe the etrex Legend does come with a cable and is quite a bit nicer and only costs about $30 more, so with the added cost of the cable, ol’ yeller isn’t so much of a bargain. Also, Garmin does make a few GPSs without computer interface, (Geko 101 for example), so double check this before you buy. But there is no need to buy an advanced unit if all you want is a computer interface.

I think the autorouting feature also seems like a bonus. I think that will help me get to caches quicker. I will look at the Legend Cx again though. Thanks…

I did exactly what Wis Kid mentioned but I bought a refurbished Etrex yellow unit for the kids to use and got the cable off Ebay. Total 60.00 including the one year warranty. Nice inexpensive way to get a unit that you can download way points into.

Just a note, Dad and I were up at Gander Mountain in Duluth today and he bought me an early birthday present. A CPS Map60CSx!!!

He applied for a Gander charge card and was able to save 10% on his first purchase. List price was $499, marked down to $449- 10% = $400.

They also had a Map 70csx for $399. It was hard for me to choose which one, but the 60 just felt better in my hand.

Not sure how much you want to spend. They also had the new etrex legends but forget how much they were.

I jetted up to Gander Mt in Duluth on Friday night. Got the yellow Venture CX like the size and the color. Got it with some lake maps loaded. It is sweet I absolutely Love it. Just getting the hang of it now. I also applied for the gander mt card for 10% off. Thanks all for the advice….
