It seems that our USA geocoins are disappearing. I have dropped one that was new one in one of my caches and was not there on the next visit. No log in the book etc. I dropped one in another cache and AuntieNae dropped another coin but mine went missing with the other found. I may need to stop releasing in Wisconsin! Our goal was to see others find a coin as we didn’t till we released some. The 78th was left at Rovers Run cache and is our last. I have more unactivated as I wanted to reach 100 released before the end of 2006. Should they be released here to find or not? HELP ME!

You may be plagued by a clandestine collector. You can decrease the value of your coins to such a collector if they are not perfect. Some cachers have taken to drilling a hole in the coin and attaching a mission card. This may keep your coin moving for quite a while longer. ~tb

Not only do I drill a hole now I also take a grinder to the side of the coins and make 3-4 deep marks.

I may have to start drilling some and see what happens. Thanks for the feed back. The Tapps

You may want to avoid dropping any TB’s or coins in “KinderSafari Hodag.” I dropped a TB there and it disappeared in a few days. Then someone else dropped a coin and it too disppeared! Just a warning that cachers should avoid dropping coins in this cache. The cache is very nice so don’t avoid looking for it.

I have decided that I am also going to drill holes in my next batch of coins that I release and attach tags. I bought some clear photo holder type of keychains on e-bay for about fifty cents each and Da Bloodhound drilled holes in the coins for me. I am sure he would be willing to help anyone out that doesn’t have a drill press for a small “coin” fee 😀 . The coins that I had previously released had been in a bi-fold coin flip with a tag on one side explaining that the coin was a travelbug and should be logged and placed in an other cache. Recently I have had 2 coins disappear in the Eau Claire area in the first cache I placed them in – which is really disappointing to have someone that is probably local to not log your coin. One was a Compass Rose that I place in the silver ammo can that Zuma put out for my 1000th cache find 😥 … I will continue to release them all and hope that they get shared!

Robin, I’m glad you’ll still release them, because we’ve had the privilege of finding—-and logging and moving–a few of yours. We had a hard time letting the South Pointing Compass go, but it is so cool, everyone needs a chance to log it! Thanks for trusting human nature to be good most of the time.

It pains me to know that people would just keep these. Trekkin’ has had a hard time letting the ones go we’ve bought, and if any disappear, it will be hard for him to keep paying for coins that go missing. Too bad.

We have had the same problem here in Md with coins disappearing. I know it happens in other places to. We have come up with an alternate idea. Let me say that there are people that are against it but they dont have to participate. We all like to find a coin in a cache but it can get real frustrating, as well as expensive, if you put coins out & they walk so…………heres what we have done.
We have created a thread where you can post your coins with their numbers for others to discover. The only catch is that you have to share your coins too. It doesnt matter if you only have a couple just as long as you share.
It isnt quite the same as finding a coin but at least you dont lose them.

if anyone is interested in this option & want to get more info you can come to MGS & ask any of our moderators the best way to go about setting it up. Good luck Mother Wolf

I dont know how exactly you would do this, but find out if the last finder took them thinking they were swag. As with outdoor wisconsin showing gum in a cache, there may be a lot of newbies out there thinking everything is a trade. I think the intro to geocaching classes really help with this kind of thing.

I’ve recently released my first geocoin that I have purchased and I have others in reserve to be released. I have not altered them but have included on their mission statements my desire that cachers “trade up or even”. The coin does have a statement regarding the idea of “even if you don’t have a coin to leave but can further the mission of the coin, go ahead and grab it”. I hope that those who find it will abide by those statements. I really enjoy the variety of designs out there and maybe one day if I find a big bag of money in a cache somewhere, I will have a signature coin made. Until then I hope that the community will continue to release and circulate the coins they have and find. 🙂

Good luck, labrat, hope this works for you. I did the same thing with the ones I released, and one has disappeared from the face of the earth. We have thought too that perhaps some don’t realize they are trading, not keeping items, but mine was clearly marked as such. They all have specific missions in the hope that whoever grabs them will help further the mission.

SammyClaws. I tried that. Contacted everyone who logged between the log showing it was in the cache and the first log to mention it being gone. No one has seen it. Maybe it will show up elsewhere eventually, but for now, I pulled it and marked it as lost, so other don’t go specifically hoping to find it.

I did hear a hopeful story this week. Timberline Echoes (Trekkin’s brother and sil) just spent a few days with us, and they had sent out a TB over two years ago with a mission to go to Alaska, then work it’s way back to them. It all happened according to the mission, so there are success stories out there, too!

I have over 100 geocoins in the wild and for the most part they have been moving pretty good. I have had 2 recently that disappeared from the first cache they where placed in. That bothers me more, because you almost have to figure that it is someone local that removed the coin – but maybe not…….

As far as Mother Wolfs post about viturally logging coins – although I am sure she meant well, there is a rule about virtual logging of coins and travel bugs. This is copied directly from the groundspeak forums “How to log a travelbug or geocoin”

If you log a bogus virtual log on a TB, or offer your own TB up for virtual logging you will risk having that TB page locked forever. This means, if you never saw a bug, but got the bug number and youlog it, that bug is in risk of being taken out of the game. Don’t do this to TB owners who inadvertently might post a photo, or someone else posts a photo, of their TB number. Don’t log it virtually. It’s considered abuse of the system. And it’s not fair play.

If you show your coin or TB to someone they may discover it. If your coin or TB turns up missing you may make a copy and release it. You may not “virtually” share tracking numbers on the internet or in person by giving them the tracking number of coins or TBs that they have not actually seen I know it happens, but those who choose to do it (especially on-line where it can be easily come upon in an internet search by the people) run the risk of having those tracking numbers permenently locked. There are actually people out there who have nothing better to do and disapprove of virtually logging to the point that they do internet searches for pages that share tracking numbers and report these to groundspeak. Just an FYI………………..

I have seen that some people have posted pics of their TBs on their info page and have, perhaps, inadvertently allowed the tracking number to be visible. When I posted pics of my bugs, I had used a photo editor to mask out the numbers for just the reason that Wi_Robin states in her post. I would hope that everyone would abide by the rules and not virtual log anything (other than a virtual cache). There have been a lot of TBs and a few coins that I have come across and many of them are noteworthy. I wish I would have at least jotted down the numbers on these so they could be logged as “discovered”. I would personally have a difficult time logging a coin or bug that I have not seen in person.

With all the bad news of coins disappearing lately, I thought I’d post some good coin news for a change.

Alec’s Tribute To Space Engineers Satellite Geocoin made it back to us today after traveling 4600.9 miles. The coin is in good shape and ready to head back with him to Florida next week, and on to the Kennedy Space Center to finally reach it’s goal!!!

Thanks a bunch to roundnround we go for their extra effort in getting this coin back in time for the trip to Florida!

If you want some good coin news: TBMP1P

Moved by 28 different people, 4 states, 4 countries, 22411 miles.

I hope I didn’t just jinx it now.

Of course, I’ve had some bad luck with travelers as well – both coins and TBs. Such are the risks. Of course one would hope that it wouldn’t get stolen out of the very first cache it was in. That totally bites.
