There was a bear that denned up about a mile from our house last winter, near three caches. Well, the bear is on the move again. They’ve been spotting him first in the Grandad’s Bluff area of LaCrosse and the cemetery below, and now he’s been moving along the LaCrosse River valley back near our place!

Oy vey. I did spot tracks once early last spring, but have never actually seen any of these errant bears. The DNR officer tracking him is sure it’s the “Neshonoc Bear,” heading back to his denning area and eating his way there. Until he becomes a problem, they aren’t going to bother him. I worry that in proximity to such populated areas, it’s only a matter of time before he does create trouble and we know how those episodes tend to end.

I hope I get to spot him this time! With camera in hand, preferably. The good camera, not my cheap-*** geocaching camera!

Good luck getting a picture. If you are anything like me, that opportunity will never present itself as long as you have that camera with you.

To anyone that is caching and may be afraid of bears and don’t want to encounter one, just talk, sing, whistle, etc. as you walk along. They will hear you coming and leave before you ever know there was one around. If you do encounter one, don’t turn and run. Stand tall and make yourself look as big as you can. If you have a jacket on, open it up and hold onto it while spreading your arms out. You just made yourself look almost twice as big as normal. Don’t make sudden moves. Make yourself big and back away slowly. Be aware of any young cubs that may be with it. You do not want to be between mama and her young. Nearly 100% of the time they want absolutely nothing to do with you.

Trekkin’ is from northern WI, so we know bear safety and all that good stuff. My biggest concern right now is that our son likes to walk his dog back there. Course, I walked that dog back there all the time when he was in Arizona last winter, and the most I ever saw was tracks.

That’s about par for me. I never see the cool stuff.
