Must give lots of kudos to Garmin! I had trouble with the weather proof band on my gps. Called Garmin and 15 mins later a new replacement gps was on it’s way to me. All was great with geocaching!
Fast forward 6 months. The weather proof band is starting to come loose. Thought there was no way Garmin would do anything cuz they already fixed the first one. Forgot to mention the page button had an issue. When pressed it shut off the gps unit. I finally called Garmin today and to my surprise the gps was malfunctioning and I should ship it back. As they finished my replacement order there was a problem. My gps was not available! Ok so I now get a step up….great. Oh wait there is an other problem. That gps is on back order. Great I thought now what. To my surprise I was going to get the most current model in my class. That’s an upgrade of 2 gps.
I have never had such a great company who actually cares about there customers.

I think they understand exactly how well this community communicates with each other and getting bad press for customer service would really hurt.10/04/2007 at 2:50 pm #1879684@Lostby7 wrote:

They make a great product which I’ve never had any problems with except for what I caused myself (cracking the window), but their customer service is AWFUL to say the least. I’ll stick by Magellan because of the reliability and durability, but I sure wish they gave a damn about us cachers.

I was going to mention that but as I do not own a Magellan and haven’t used their services I couldn’t speak first hand but I have heard many people complain about the customer service offered by Magellan (perhaps they are still mad about Lance winning their little race 7 times 😈 ).
10/05/2007 at 1:36 am #1879686I have had a similar experience with Garmin customer service as Bear Bear. I was very impressed with them replacing a $79.00 yellow etrex which had a worn out rubber band and torn out page button cover. Much better than what we get on our cars which cost a lot more…
I’ve never used anything but Garmins, but they’ve certainly won me as a customer for life.

10/05/2007 at 7:34 pm #1879687I can add another positive Garmin story. 2 years ago, my 60cs suffered an owner caused injury .. you know, they really really really do not like being hit by your car tail gate. I called Garmin and for $50 they replaced the smashed GPSr for a new one.
I did have a wee bit of difficulty in that they sent me a 60c so I had to send that back, the 60cs they then sent would not track satelites so it went back, the next one sent was a 60c so it went back .. in the meantime I bought the 76cs because this was taking too long .. in the end, I did get a brand new 60cs that I turned around and sold to a friend.
But, all in all, awesome customer service!
AuntieNae10/25/2007 at 11:56 am #1879688I bought their MetroGuide Mapsource program to install into my GPS and I can’t seem to be able to get the unlock code for the software. I’ve had to make several e-mails and they only seem to be concerned about the fact that I neglected to register my garmin vista gps which I purchased in January (because I tend to not register small electronics as I don’t like to get excessive junk mail) rather than the issue about the software I purchased last month.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I also praise garmins customer service, But their email support could be much better. if you even get a response via email its usually a canned response, you’ll get much better support if you call.
Metroguide is fully unlocked software, you can install on as many receivers as you own. Are you sure you aren’t having issues with city navigator? City navigator is garmins auto-routing map product, and it has the silly unlock codes/single gps receiver install scheme.
10/25/2007 at 10:38 pm #1879690No, but…
I just got off the phone with Garmin. The Metroguide software does not require an unlock code (except for one particular version in Australia, you didn’t buy that did you?). Are you sure you didn’t buy City Navigator?
NOW, assuming you did buy City Navigator, there should be a coupon in the package with ONE unlock code good for ONE GPS. If you need to use the software on more than one, you can buy additional unlock codes (I think they cost about 1/3 the price of the software retail price.)
If you got a defective package without a code, take it back to the retailer and get another copy. I have never heard of this happening, but obviously it is not impossible.
If you bought the software used, grey market, off Ebay, or otherwise from an unreputable source, well, you’re probably out of luck. If you register your GPS, they will sell you an unlock code for it, but you should probably just try to return it and get a working copy. (Missing the unlock code means it is virtually worthless as a GPS map.) Otherwise, you will be out another $50 or so to get the new code.
The reason they were asking you about registration was that they require you to be registered to sell you a new unlock code. However, once they got everything organized, they would have told you that Metroguide has no unlock codes anyway (and is borderline obsolete to boot.)
10/26/2007 at 2:41 am #1879691I finally talked to a real person today and found out that indeed Metroguide does not require an unlock code. He told me to just ignore the page asking for an unlock code and I have been able to start using it.
I wonder why they ask for it? 🙄
11/01/2007 at 10:37 pm #1879692We had a similar issue with the band around our Garmin. The fact that they agreed to fix it and then just replaced it at no charge is something. It’s nice to know that some companies still do believe that customer service is important.
11/08/2007 at 2:11 pm #1879693I’ll have to keep that in mind when and if I need to buy a new GPSr…My Magellan Explorist 400 has been pretty good, but I’ve notcied some of the pixels have gone out on the screen and had to tear it apart a month or so ago and clean the buttons…the IN zoom button wasn’t working…a cotton swab and a little rubbing alcohol and all was working fine….I can’t knock it, it’s been pretty good to me…knock on wood.

Phil12/22/2007 at 3:59 am #1879694I was having problems with my map 60CSX losing satellite signal while I was out in the field. Just go blank. Called customer service told them the problem. The guy said “Huh!?!? Send it in and we’ll look at it.” Well I was a tad nervous about sending it in so I continued to use it and it still had problems. So, I sent it in last Friday, they received it on Monday and had a spankin’ brand new unit show up from the UPS guy in my hands when I got home from work tonight. They never said anything about warranty or anything. That sold me. I’ll use a Garmin forever. Do ya think that if I send in Old Blue after is bounce down the highway and run over by a semi that they’ll replace that one too?
12/22/2007 at 4:12 am #1879695I’m thinking that they are rolling in money these past several years (this year GPS units are THE gift to buy) and can afford to be generous in their warranty service. The great thing is that they are also developing a phenomenal reputation for their brand.
12/22/2007 at 5:47 am #1879696And they’re not made in China!
