Although we have not been in this sport very long, we have been rewarded with many wonderful experiences and we have made some lifelong friends. As such, we would like to give back just a little more to the greatest group of cachers in the country!
We are planning on putting together a 2008 Wisconsin Geocaching Awards Event to be scheduled late February or early March 2008. The premise is that we would compile statistics combined with voting to give out awards in several categories such as: most caches found in 2007, most FTFs in 2007, cacher of the year, (or maybe a zuma! groupie of the year) etc. The field is wide open for suggestions. We have a name in mind an an award type in the works, but that will be kept confidential until everything is settled upon.
We are soliciting your opinions to see if we should go forward with this plan or if we are just out of our minds!? We would need suggestions on categories, a place suitable for the event, how to best compile the statistics and so on.
Any thoughts or interest?? ❓
10/18/2007 at 2:19 am #1880353How about a category something like, the most Wisconsin finds by a non-Wisconsin resident? Can you think of any Minnesota primates that might qualify for this particular award? 😀

That one is actually on the list!
10/18/2007 at 2:57 am #1880355I think this event should be a nice evening type at a hotel with a ballroom we could have a nice dinner and conversation and the kids could swim and the groupie’s could drink and we wouldnt have to drive!
10/18/2007 at 3:00 am #1880356Or around a bonfire so the groupies can bring wood to Zuma so he can put it on the fire for us.

How about a nice bonfire, black tie affair in a ballroom with zuma! in his Speedos as the emcee?

A zuma groupie would love that.

I know of some Illinois cachers who might give you a run for your money… better get crackin’ ! 😆
10/18/2007 at 2:29 pm #1880361Bandits – A most wonderful suggestion. I think Collins idea of a dinner/hotel etc. would be perfect. Wisconsin Dells?
10/18/2007 at 2:36 pm #1880362I think it’s a fantastic idea! I like the hotel bit too, but no black tie please. 8)
10/18/2007 at 5:20 pm #1880363A dissenting opinion here –
There’s already enough controversy about multi-logging “attended” on events to get credit for finding temporary caches, and IMHO an awards event will just add fuel to the fire.
What do you define as a find?
If event temp caches are allowed, then those who believe that event caches are basically the same as stages in a multi-cache (all part of one bigger cache and shouldn’t be counted individually) and they are just beat out of #1 cacher by a multi-logger, then bad feelings could result.
If event temp caches not are allowed, then those who believe that event caches are real caches and should be counted individually, and are just beat out of #1 because only unique finds are counted, then bad feelings could result.
A way around this would be to have an “any finds” award winner and a “unique finds” award winner – but do you really want to go there and stir the pot?
IMHO its better to keep geocaching a non-competitive activity rather than have an awards event.
10/18/2007 at 7:16 pm #1880364I’m hoping for more awards like “Best DNF attempt”, Longest Unnecessary Bushwhack”, “Best Puzzle cache” “Longest Multi-cache” “Rookie of the Year” “Nickname that makes the least sense” and so on.
10/18/2007 at 7:43 pm #1880365I’m going to not vote … because I’m 50/50 on this.
I agree with the concerns about what counts and what doesn’t for most finds, etc. … I’d rather not see us go there (any more). Right now that issue has fire but no fuel, a plastic statue or pressed wood plaque would burn too well on that fire.
HOWEVER, I think it would be a great idea IF none of it was about how many finds you have. Go with the best cache of the year, or funniest log entry, etc, etc, etc … make the awards about singular accomplishments and I’m all for it … especially if what the awards are and the voting on them, is done after the award-able year is over (thus eliminating direct competition). It should be all about fun and an official gathering to see it happen.
10/18/2007 at 8:43 pm #1880366It sounds like it could be a lot of fun if some other categories were used and find counts were avoided.
Along with other category suggestions already mentioned for individual caches/logs, you could kind of award the more active cachers with awards like “most WI counties cached in during the last year”, or most states, or farthest away from home coordinates.
It was just the idea of compiling statistics and awarding most finds that made me question the event.
