Hi everyone! I’m jumping the gun a little here but I am just so darn’d excited!
I purchased a GPSR for my husband for Christmas and can’t wait to get started geocaching. He told me about it the first time over a year ago after his buddy purchased a GPSR.
My husband is an avid motorcyclist and often we go on day trips and several overnight/weekend trips on our bikes. When I decided to buy him one for Christmas I had these trips in mind, however I remembered his interest in geocaching.
I’m going to upload all the locations within 10 miles of our house onto the GPSR (according to geocaching.com there are several dozen) and then wrap it for him.. When he opens it and realizes what I’ve done, I can see the family out geocaching all Christmas afternoon (provided the weather isn’t too bad).
I look forward to being an avid geocacher and am now considering purchasing some smaller/cheaper handheld GPSRs for my kids for Christmas as well. Maybe we’ll run into some of you someday on a chance cache.

But you know what? I after posting here, I went online and purchased a second smaller/cheaper GPSR for my kids for Christmas too!
They are homeschooled and we can definitely find a way to turn this into a wonderful educational experience for the kids!

LOL I’ve had it in the back of my mind actually… what I would put in the cache and where I might plant it. I really LOVE the fact that we’ve got cooperation with the WDNR because I’m surrounded by State Parks and Wildlife Areas!
But I want to hunt for a while first, see how others do it so I can get more ideas on the where and how. 🙂

I see many people here are on “Teams” is it usually family teams or a group of close friends?
If we decided to form a family “team” would I have to create a new account here in order to log for the team?Just sorta feeling things out. Thanks for any and all info!

In order to log caches, you need to setup an account on geocaching.com. You can use the same name as you have here, or you can make a new name. It is your choice. Once you do this, you should edit your profile here to indicate your gc.com name. Most people have one account for their family, but there are many who have different accounts for individual members. Again, this is your call. Just do what makes sense for your situation.

As to name/teams – in my family we each have our own geocaching.com name and WGA name. This is mostly because I first joined up with a name that included my children, but then my spouse got interested (and we usually geocache separately) and my son wanted his own ID. However, it is also useful on the WGA site to have your own separate ID’s so you have distinct votes on WGA matters (16 and over). You can still have one vote per eligible member even with team names, but it may be easier (for those checking) if the WGA ID’s are separate (if you plan on voting.)
I look forward to hearing about your Christmas Day geocache finds! Good luck! I hope the snow isn’t too deep. (My first find was in many inches of fresh snow.)
