Well, we did it. My husband opened his GPSr christmas gift and inside I had, along with the GPSr, a map and list of 10 caches in our area, printouts of each cache, the FAQs of geocaching and benchmarks.
He was really excited over this gift and as I had hoped, he wanted to go out caching!
I had purchased 2 GPSr’s, a new Magellan Roadmate and a Magellan Explorist 100. The Roadmate was really off on coords, but the explorist was dead on. We roamed for a while before we discovered this, but once we decided that the Explorist would have better outdoor coords (off-roads) we found our VERY 1st Cache!
Actually the kids discovered it but we all got such a rush out of it. It was awesome and I know we are hooked now. The rest of the afternoon was spent looking for 3 others, we only found 2 more tho because the snow was a little deterrent for one. But my husband kept saying “we gotta hide one of our own, this is too cool!”
I think we even might come to the Meet N Greet at the Janboree! It would be great to meet people who have been doing this for a while and get some personal insights from “old-timers”.
    Happy Caching!

Congrats! We knew you could do it!

If you think about the intended use, you will understand why your Roadmate seems less accurate than the Explorist. Car GPS’s generally need to be accurate to within 100 feet or so. If you are trying to find a gas station or hospital, getting within 100 feet is good enough. Your “outdoor” GPS (the Explorist) is designed to pinpoint your location in the woods. The best they can do (with the technology you are using) is around 15 feet, but that is much better than 100 feet.

Glad to hear you are having fun. It usually takes just that first find to hook some one on this sport.
