It has been spotted a few times in the almost the same location. Last spring, at dusk as I walk my dog along the back 40, something long and sleek crossed in front of us twice. And there was pictures from a trail cam in Wisconsin Outdoor Weekly that came form the Drummond area. Them cats are around!

01/24/2008 at 12:22 am #1883870There are sightings quite regularly in the Land o’ Lakes area. There has been one spotted in the Rhinelander area off and on for the past few years. Our friend who is a county deputy had it jump right in front of his squad car. It’s also been in the paper and on the news up here.
Little Otter saw a black one up here when she put out End of the Earth.
They are around but there are enough deer to keep them from getting hungry.

01/24/2008 at 1:14 am #1883873We found tracks in Perrot Park about 18 years ago. We talked with the rangers, who denied it at first, but then went back and got plaster casts. At that point, they admitted that there have been sightings over the years, but as the article says, they are very secretive. Reading up on them, there is really very little known about their habits and lifestyle, other than they eat meat!
01/24/2008 at 1:15 am #1883874About 3 years ago, there were cougar sightings in Western Kenosha County, but never proven. 2 years ago, one was spotted in Minooka Park in Waukesha County. Haven’t heard of any others until this one. Thanks for the heads up, Gary.
01/24/2008 at 2:08 am #1883875There have been cougars in Minnesota and the UP for years. Until about a year or two ago, the Michigan DNR took the same stance on the issue as the WDNR, and that is that there are no cougars in the state. The MDNR finally went out in search of evidence, and guess what they found? Tracks and scat. After running dna tests, they found that the cats were the real deal and not a released pet. Apparently, lions kept as pets are from south/central America. So. if thay are in Minnesota and the UP, why not here? I believe the WDNR’s official stance remains the same. Now I ask, if mountain lions are extinct in Wisconsin, why does the DNR tell you that it is illegal to shoot one?
I hope my memory is serving me right. I know I read this stuff not too long ago. If I’m wrong, my appologies.

I remember those sightings. Large cat tracks were also found in the snow around Drugan’s Castle Mound. Some photos of the tracks even made it into the LaCrosse Tribune along with “eye witness” reports of mountain lion sightings.
It is my understanding that they stalk their prey and they like to attack from the rear.

01/24/2008 at 7:54 pm #18838793_Hawks, there were also sightings down in the junkyard near Nutbush around the same time. We’d been hiking with two other families, all of us possessed of a good share of woods knowledge due to our hobbies. Our son was 3 at the time (hiking to the top of Perrot Ridge!) and his buddy was 5. I think I was about 6 months pg with son number 2 at that point, yeah, we can be a bit nuts! They’d picked up tracking books at the park office for little kids and having fun when they spotted these and couldn’t find them in the booklet. The grown-ups took one look and kind of gasped. One of the parents had spent an entire summer doing survival stuff in the Alaskan wilderness and said, “Hmm, if you hear anything off in the shadows in the woods saying in a deep voice…’Yo….me-OW!” just back away!”
Also, a cache we did a couple of weeks ago, ShiftMadCity, out in the middle of Bear Bluff country, mentioned big cat tracks about three winters ago in a log or the cache listing. Like the size of some guy’s size 11 boots. 😯
