This is to let you all know that the WGA BOD (last year’s version) has adopted the following motion:

Whereas the current logo used by the WGA is felt by some to be dated, and in need of refreshing, the WGA will hold a contest open to all members and friends for the development of new logo.

The contest will be announced immediately following this motion, should it be passed. This motion and the votes by BOD members will also be made public at the same time.

The contest will be advertised in the WGA forums, and proposals will be submitted for a period of 30 days, March 15 thru April 15. The contest is open to all WGA members and friends.

After the 30 day period of accepting proposals, voting will commence and last for 14 days, to narrow the field of proposals to 3 contenders.

After the 14 day period, the 3 proposals that receive the most votes will be voted on, with the fourth option added of leaving the logo as is, without change.

The proposal that receives the most votes in the second period of voting will be forwarded to the next WGA Board of Directors to consider becoming the new WGA logo, with strong advisement that it it be adopted as the new WGA logo, to be used on the WGA website, and all official WGA documents. In the event the new WGA Booard of Directors chooses not to adopt the contest winner as the new logo, the rationale for that decision and the voting shall be made public.

The new log, once adopted will be transitioned into use over a 12 month period.

The designer of the winning logo proposal will be awarded a 2007 Wisconsin geocoin.

I would suggest that if a new logo is created that there is some understanding that no changes in logo should occur over the next 5-7 years.

Reason:
It takes time for a logo to become recognizable by those not directly associated to the organization. This would allow due time for individuals to identify with the logo and establish an connection with the WGA itself.

What could be allowed:
Minor changes in the logo can occur over the years as touching up the graphic. For example if you take our current logo you would keep the same items but could possibly update the look of the GPS unit and the container. You WOULD NOT however change the position of the items.

Here is my simple logo suggestion…my opinion is less is more. I don’t know if you wanted the actual words…Wisconsin Geocaching Association on the logo…but here it is

Hey, thanks for the submission. I was starting to worry that no one would be entering the contest. Good entry, and let’s hope it doesnt scare everyone else off.

Just a reminder that the winner of the contest will be awarded a 2007 Wisconsin geocoin!!!!

Assuming this submission wins, be sure to get permission from Groundspeak to use that “G” in the logo. I think they have it trademarked.

That “G” logo isn’t part of geocaching.com’s intellectual property. It is a commonly used royalty-free logo created by somebody else.

Is there a specific reason for this timetable other than to try to get it done quickly? The reason I ask is because I know some college students in graphic design who could work on something to submit but they’re very busy now until the end of the semester in mid-May. Could we extend the deadline until the end of June?

I have to agree with Ken on the timetable…I’d like to wait until at least such time as we can get at least 10-12 samples to choose from.

The timetable was announced Feb 12. Submissions will be accepted up to midnight April 15th. That is a period of over 2 months, and that seems like plenty of time to me, though I could be wrong.

Unfortunately, it would be difficult to change the timetable at this point, and doing so would risk derailing progress on an issue that our membership has asked for progress on. Frankly members have been discussing this for much much longer, so it shouldnt come as a big surprize.

I’d steer away from the geocaching.com colors. Wasn’t there a logo similar to Dave’s proposed in jest a year or so ago with a spinning Wisconsin?
