I recieved this email today!
Greetings! I am the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway staff person
that
has been assigned the task of pulling information together on
geocaching so
the park can decide what direction it should take in the future. So far I have reviewed the type
and
location of geocache sites near the Riverway at geocaching.com. I have
also reviewed the information on earthcache sites. ( We are looking at
traditional geocaches and virtual caches as options.)I am now in the process of talking to other national parks about how
they
reached their decisions on their level and type of involvement. We are looking at the need for and the opportunities geocaching can
provide. Minnesota State Parks are becoming more involved in
geocaching
and Wisconsin Interstate is looking at adding it. As you are aware the
state forests have been allowing it. So it is obvious that people
living
or visiting the Riverway are interested. We are interested in hearing what interested parties have to say. What
has
been your involvement with geocaching? What would you like to see? Do
you
have an interest in helping establish or monitoring sites? What in
your
experience would be the use at these sites? Are earthcache or virtual
sites
less popular? Once sites are established do they need to grow or
rotate to
keep interest? Do you have names of other people I should hear from?Basically any information you think would be helpful, we would like to
hear. You can also pass my contact information on to others. Thanks
for
your assistance in this. The park has set the goal of having a
decision
made by this time next year. Meaning, there is plenty of time to
dialogue
and come up with a solid plan. Feel free to contact me at any point in
the
next year.Jean S

[email protected]Both elfdoctors and myself have been working with the local NPS law enforcement officer on this issue as well as the WI Reviewers.
I emailed him a week ago about this issue. He is all for it while others in the NPS are dead fast against it.So here is our shot!
02/21/2008 at 1:30 am #1885011Have them talk with Ken Block, who is the chief ranger at Effigy Mounds. In general, containers are not allowed in the National Parks, but he was very willing to work with me on getting an earthcache there, and has just seen the first log from a cacher and liked what he saw.
It’s good news, that’s for sure!
02/21/2008 at 2:20 am #1885012Well, for the most part, I think they are just working on getting caches approved along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Which would be the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers. I have a couple caches placed on non-NPS property and ELfdoctors also has one placement. If this ever gets approved, there could be one hell of a canoe cache run!
02/21/2008 at 4:05 am #1885013Chris, I think I was the one who gave them your e-mail after talking with you about this topic at the event in Centuria.
I am drafting my reply to the same e-mail. I am hoping that we can get actual caches approved rather than only earthcaches. There is way too much riverfront to make many truly educational earthcaches. It would make a great canoe run!
02/22/2008 at 10:38 pm #1885014A canoe run would be awesome up there! I actually heard from my contact at Effigy Mounds. He had heard from Jean, who was cruising the sites, I guess, and she wanted ideas of people to contact about cache placements. It would be nice to work with them to put out some fun yet environmentally appropriate caches, especially if it features the paddling aspects of the riverway.
I honestly have to admit to not a lot of knowledge about those waters, so learning more and testing them out would be great fun.
