Okay, so I finally am getting around to trying to set up this hand me down Palm III. If CacheMate is already loaded on it, do I really need to install all the other Palm stuff on my desktop, or will it be enough to install CacheMate and do the hotsync thing? I already have GSAK on the desktop.
This hard drive is getting *really* full and I’m trying to minimize unnecessary disk usage where possible. Thanks!
02/28/2008 at 4:47 pm #1885279Unless I’m missing something in your question … Yes, you need to install the software on your computer also.
The FIRST step is to use the software on your computer to CONVERT the GPX file to a data file for your Palm, THEN it gets hot synced to your Palm. In fact the Converting software will start the sync “request” you will not need to use your normal Palm sync-ing software.
02/28/2008 at 4:48 pm #1885280You need the Palm software installed on the PC to do an actual HotSync “Thing”. GSAK places the output file for the Palm in a spot and then launches the HotSync Install process to install it on the Palm. The HotSync install process is a piece of software you install.
I am speaking from my experience which is with a slightly newer palm than the palm 3. I bought a tungsten w off ebay (actually I bought 2 of them..) The keyboard on that model is what drew me to it (and price)
I just went through learning all this stuff as well. Never once attended a “paperless caching” seminar or anything like that. I am just a techie nerd who likes to play with gadgets like this.
My last 2 cache outtings, I used a palm with Cachemate on it… Worked like a charm. Never even owned a plam or a pda before.

02/28/2008 at 5:21 pm #1885281Thanks, I kind of figured it was a “have to.” I re-read all the replies from my earlier questions, so I guess I’m off to the races now.
Sure hope this overloaded computer can handle it. We’ve removed just about everything we can to make space, too.
02/28/2008 at 5:25 pm #1885282😡 😡 😡 😡 😡
Wouldn’t it just figure? I ran my PQ over an hour ago and now that I’m ready to try and figure this thing out, it seems the PQs are jammed up or something. Cause it still hasn’t arrived in my mailbox.
This is why we still cache with paper! LOL
Edited to add: Technology hasn’t given up on me yet. I ran it again and this time it came through. And here I was so close to declaring myself a true Luddite!
02/28/2008 at 5:39 pm #1885283Perhaps you need to clean house – see what’s actually on your hard rive, and get rid of the junk.
Or a new PC? Or MAC?
02/28/2008 at 6:55 pm #1885284Marc, We’ve cleaned the stinker up pretty thoroughly; my vote is for a new machine, but I’ve been overruled. Fortunately, I have been successful in my quest and my only problem now…so far…is getting the thing to show my name instead of the previous owner’s. If I can’t get it to do that, I guess as long as I can put the PQs in, I won’t complain and just channel the original owner, LOL.
Do these things take forever to shut off once the power button is pressed? I’ve been warned not to let the batteries die down.
02/28/2008 at 10:12 pm #1885285I had a PQ take a day and a half for the email to get to me (it was generated right away) Was weird. The joys of technology!
