Today I was out looking for a place to shoehorn a cache into a spot in the valley. While doing this, and also making more of a call for Kid Friendly Caches I had a bit of an idea. But I cannot do it all myself, I wish I had the time, so I am going to post it here as a cache designation just like the WSQ designation.
What I am proposing is a KFC designation to cache names and also putting on a small lesson on the cache page that would relate to the location of the hide. For example, I have just submitted a cache that is hidden near a Shag bark Hickory Tree. On the cache page is information for the finders to learn a bit about the tree as well as a regular sized cache full of trade-ables as this helps keep the kids interested in the activity.
Caches could be of any style that the hider would want to do. (Yes including puzzles as long as the kids can solve them) By keeping with the lesson theme it could be nature, history, geology, or whatever you think the kids may enjoy.
So what do you all think about this? Is it worth effort?
03/09/2008 at 11:06 pm #1885914My 3 grandchildren (5, 8 & 11) introduced me to geocaching and bought me my first GPSR. Whenever I go out with them there have be at least a few KF regular size caches on the list so they can take their bucket of trading stock along. I hid 50 caches last year and I think almost half of them are KFC. If the KFC notation gets implemented I’ll gladly go through and add it to mine. As with anything in life kids are the future so lets include them in the game.
03/09/2008 at 11:29 pm #1885915I am going to add the designator to 2 of mine and work in a bit of educational content into both. One related to space exploration and the other based on mushrooms. And the next couple I place will definitely follow the theme and have the designator.

03/10/2008 at 12:17 am #1885917I’m happy to say that I was able to quickly add the “KFC” designation to 10 of my 50+ hides. They are a combination of regular, small and micro size caches. There are also puzzles and unique containers. All but one are in the Sussex-Merton area, so this would be a great place to take the kids on an outing. I keep them well stocked with trading items and have a reputation for producing and maintaining quality caches. My other 20+ caches would make this area an ideal place for your whole team to visit. I would be happy to give you any information that might help before coming to this area. Most have been found on a regular basis and a lot are WF. Thanks for thinking of the kids.

I have hit at least one of yours up in the Crivitz area. I would like to get down your way sometime to find a few but I will wait til the weather is more Hemi Friendly.

Oops! I forgot the hide in the campground at Twin Bridges Park. That’s what happens when you have two geocaching homes.

03/10/2008 at 3:03 am #1885923That is the best idea I have heard of in a long time. I will review my placements and add the KFC tag to those that apply as well. It would be neat to have a list of accepted criteria that would constitute a KFC. Like very short walk, regular to large sized container, kid themes, child level educational value etc…Thank you for suggesting it!

03/10/2008 at 2:10 pm #1885926I think it’s a good idea, But KFC? Kentucky Fried Chicken is what I think of.
Also, don’t forget, there is an attribute made specifically for this. In fact, you can do your PQ’s based solely on that attribute.
Just a thought. I’m not putting down the idea at all.
Yikes, I just realized how few of my 57 caches are kid friendly. 😯
03/10/2008 at 8:00 pm #1885927This is a great idea and especially for paperless caching where the attributes may not show in the cachemate file.
Consider it done. (Well, done soon anyway.)
In case the Kentucky Fried…I mean, Kid Friendly designation changes…don’t know if there’s a way to keep people notified other than checking the forum…and not everybody is a WGA member.
I wonder if someone is artistic enough out there to create a little logo to plunk in your cache page, like the WGA logo? Don’t ask me, I’m a writer, not an artist…
