Hmmmm. Congratulations to Dave, for finally giving out, and not finishing First again.

Or Congratulations to Cheeto, for running Dave to the ground, wearing the old man down so far he got sick!???

Well, good job to both of these diehards!

Congrats to Cheeto and Dave for their continued impressive numbers on the Lonely Cache Game.

    Thanks for the congrats.

I have found roughly 85 – 90% of the lonely caches in a 40 mile radius around my house in Appleton. The remaining one’s I have not found are all puzzles I could not solve in time and/or are missing or still snow covered yet.

    Some stats:
    – 1/3 (10 out of 29) of the one’s I attempted/found were puzzle caches.
    – I attempted one multi 4 times before finding it. Each time walking my puppy. It’s a great excuse for caching.
    – I looked for caches in 4 cemeteries. One in the dark. I am not fond of cemeteries.
    – I used a ladder to climb a tree and was “spotted” by K0rpl and Marc and subsequently found my 500th cache. I am afraid of heights.
    – I revisited a tank 4 times that I had already visited 3 times and it was there all along and finally found it.
    – I made the Jamaica Mistaica. And while making the Mistaica, I fell through the ice into Black Otter Lake. Thanks Alex for laughing!
    – I “walked a mile” for some cheese.
    – I Baird my Soul.
    – I uttered many 4 letter words. Most of them while filling my gas tank for a second time in the same week.
    – I earned a few girl scout badges.
    – I got a Library card – never had one! Then I checked out a book on the Appleton Performing Arts Center and read the entire thing front to back.
    – I sorted through song lyrics and created a SQL database table to store the lyrics and searched through them to find just the right one.
    – I found the tab to a lock ‘N’ lock container along a rock covered overgrown strip of land while inhaling Kaukauna air for over an hour. And lived! Never was I so happy to find a 1 inch piece of camo tape covered plastic in my whole life.
    – I stared down some diners at the Chevy Garage while they were eating their lunch. Probably a scarey sight for them! Still not sure about those bowties.
    – I learned all about Marc’s dutch relatives. They all scare me.
    – I created a spreadsheet of Western movies and the actors they share and then saw one of those western movie’s in the video store and almost rented it.
    – I just couldn’t figure out how that Apple got into my eye or make sense of those Penultimate numbers…

All of this (and more!) in 16 days. I started on March 14th.

As of March 16th I had 475 caches found. I had only found 25 in 2008. In the last 16 days I have tacked on 45 more to that as I chased these lonely caches.

    It was a fun run!

You will not be seeing my name near the top for April.

And Cheeto is the winner of an unactivated Signal CITO geocoin. Congrats and PM me your address so I can send it to you.

    Hey Cheeto,

Again big congrats, and thanks for your post. I think it really highlights how much fun chasing the Lonely Caches can be, and some of my most memborable caches this winter have been the elusive Lonely Caches. What a great list of memories for the past 2 weeks!

I have not yet resorted to using a ladder for tree caches, but have a few nearby that I have considered it, so that one cracked me up.

Did you think that a lot of the Lonely Caches were Lonely because they were just too hard, or do you think that some are Lonely because they are kind of lame, and instead of being replaced or maintained, should just be archived?

cheeto, What a great accomplishment, congratulations to you. Your stats make for fascinating reading, too.

I can’t answer for his experience zuma, but in mine, the Lonely Ones have been for the most part awesome caches in places that take a little work to reach. One might have been “carried” a little adrift from its original location by last summer’s flooding, but it wasn’t that far from GZ.
I can’t really say that any of them have been lame caches.

I’ve found almost all of the lonely caches I’ve attempted to be challenging, particularly in the winter. Many have been memorable in some way with the ante upped by the game and curiosity about why they happened to become lonely. There have been a few lame ones, most of those now archived. Some needed attention and got it, with the owner’s assistance and/or gratitude. I’m still looking forward to the ones I tried and haven’t been able to find due to winter conditions along with a long list of others that are out past the sixty mile radius I’ve been operating in. I just wish I had much more time, an unlimited budget, and perhaps a helicopter. Remote locations are a common denominator I’ve noticed with many – it will soon be bug heaven at most of those, so now is prime time to do some chasing.

        – cheeto –

KUDOS to your efforts, and thanks for your entertaining post. Again, it highlights how CRAZY chasing the Lonely Caches can be, and some of our most memorable caches that came this winter in February have been the elusive Lonely Caches. Thanks for sharing your list of memories. 😆

Our winter cache numbers went up also due in part to some LCG activities along with Snomocaching and The Great Northwoods Treasure hunt in March, which was very enjoyable and relaxing. We really got to hone our winter caching skills and I’m sure all that we learned will help us once warmer weather arrives.

But, for now we have put away our snowshoes, entrenching shovel, wooden probes, winter survival gear and kit and I have dismissed the idea of buying a metal detector to find those supposed Winter Friendly caches!!

Hey, SGH, I actually tried to unearth our kids’ metal detector to aid in finding “winter friendly” ones, LOL. If I’d have found where it was stored, I’d have used it!

Now that you write that…..I may have heard one of the Timberlines Echoes mention that at the Easter Hunt event up in Boulder Junction.

But, I think if I had one of those things the Blondie Bloodhound might not want to go caching with me anymore! 😳

Any way, it probably wouldn’t work too well on tupperware and plastic containers…..but now I’m thinking 💡 about a ground penetrating radar (or is it sonar) to help out. Hmmmm….maybe for my birthday ❓

Way to go Cheeto on upending dave for this month! But Dave is right around the Corner!!!

Glad I could be there to offer some Moral “support” To this adventure!

My response is delayed and I see many have spoken up but I thought I would also answer. I have been in bed with a gall bladder attack that sent me to the ER. What fun! (this on the heals of my dad just having his taken out and having complications…)

            So…

As I look at the list of lonely caches I found they pretty much are in a few categories.

            1. Tough puzzles – This has made for a great challenge in finding them.
            2. Multi’s – That had waypoints and/or finals buried under snow or missing.
            3. Caches that were just in out of the way spots that are tough to get to or that cachers don’t live near. This is the category that costs the most gas money to go look for. Especially, when you make multiple attempts.
            4. Non-winter friendly caches

Most of them were older caches that had been around for awhile so all the locals had probably found them already and not many were die-hard players that would revisit simply for game points. That made it perfect for me as I could score “found it” points because these were simply not caches I concentrated on in the past. Either the puzzles were tough or they had very non-glamorous listings. Let’s face it, older caches do not seem as exciting as all those new one’s. When you live in an area like Appleton that has so many to find you get to prioritize those hunts. The LCG allowed me to go through the stack and reprioritize. And it paid off in spades with lots of great caches and memorable finds.

For the most part, I think all the “lame” lonely caches around here were probably adopted or archived before I concentrated on the list in March. The one’s that were adopted have been kept in place and most certainly have been or will be improved upon so that is a good thing.
