i just installed the poi loader for my garmin 60cx and ran the macro in gsak. now when i look in my unit under custom points of interest i have multiple listings for many of the caches. is this normal? is there a way to change the data it is giving me? and what does it mean?( Mu,Tr)
and is it adding icons to the map or just listings?
any help understanding and using this program would be helpful.
    thanks

I should first mention you should have the latest unit software updates/chipset updates for your unit when using Custom POIs. The 60Cx came out before this was fully supported and a few things have been updated since the beginning.
You can check what unit software you are running here: main menu, setup, system, press menu and select software version. The latest as of this post are Software version(unit software) 3.60, GPS software Version(chipset) 3.00. The easiest way to update these is by using garmins webupdater.
    http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/

When you have the POI’s list on your 60cx screen if you press the menu button and choose select database, you can then choose from different cache types. I’m guessing that some caches you loaded fall under more than one category that’s why they are listed twice, or somehow you have loaded them twice.
Tr, Mu I believe these are abbreviations for Traditional cache, and multi-cache types.

These Custom POIs are also listed on the map, though you can only see them at some of the closer zoom levels by default. To change what zoom level these show on the map follow these steps: from the map screen press menu and select setup map. Now highlight map setup- Points(third icon from left) & change the Map points setting. One issue with changing this setting is all your other POI’s(the ones that come with garmin map products) also use this setting, so your gas stations, restaurants and other points will also show up at higher zoom levels.

here’s a bit more info, wanted to break up my post…..

By default the Custom POIs use a small silver dot as an icon. you can have a custom icon for each cache type you load, and its not to difficult to to do.
all you need to do is locate The folder you exported to From GSAK(the same folder you are loading from with garmins POI loader software), and copy a 16X16bitmap image to that folder and name it the same as the category you want it used for. (An example would be if you had a .GPX or CSV waypoint file called benchmarks, you would name the bitmap file you want to use “benchmarks”.) you can find cache type icons on the web, or here is a link to some of the ones I use.

To delete the custom POI file from your gps you need to access the card, the easiest way is to connect your gps to your pc and put the GPS unit into USB Mass Storage mode. To do this goto: main menu, setup, interface and select USB mass storage mode. (Note: if your not seeing USB mass Storage mode this was added in one of the past unit software updates which you can get on Garmins website or by using the webupdater)

After testing out the macro again I realized whats happening. when a hint is longer than will fit in one POI the macro is listing the POI more than once until it gets the whole hint listed, or I also noticed its listing some info I have no use for, causing multiple waypoints.

I’m looking again to see if I can find the other macro I used before, I also don’t like having all those waypoints with the same name.

Any idea how to change this on a Garmin C330?

After a looking for a different macro I found one that works better for me. you can find quite a few different custom POI gsak macros on this page: http://gsak.net/board//MacroIndex.php

The one I’m now using is GarminPoi_GPX version 1.2 by cron. It can be found here: http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=6621&st=0&#entry39948

they only thing I did differently with this macro was change the Cache description output to this code: %con1(%Dif/%Ter)-%hint

With that code I get container type, difficulty/terrain & the rest is used for the hint. if you just wanted all 88characters used for Hint I believe you would just use the code: %hint

when you run the macro there is a popup window where you can change this option.

So any gpx file out of GSAK can be made into a POI with the POI loader?

    #1888307

    Yep!

Cool, I am getting this figured out now. Just have to play with it a bit more.

    #1888309

it picked up the way i had the caches listed with code and name, and then the lower part with container, etc. i didn’t have to make any changes. but it is fun playing with it. now i have to get it out there and see how it works in the the wild.
    thaks for all the help.

So I have the POI loader figured out. But now on the Nuvi 350 they don’t show up in the 3-D view, and I have to zoom way in on the map view to see them. I also don’t see the name of them when I am zoomed in far enough. Is there a way to change this?

Unfortunately that’s the way it works … you only see the ONE you are ACTIVELY traveling to, when in the 3D View, basically it appears as a dot (unless you setup another symbol) at the end of your route … in the map view you only see what shows on your screen when zoomed in real far (I believe it’s 200 or 300 foot scale on my unit).

It works great for selecting a cache you want to drive to from the list … but is of basically no use if you just want to see symbols representing caches, along side the road, as you drive near them. The only/best way to just see what caches are nearby as you drive, is to NOT have a map screen up, but have the POI selector up, then the nearest caches will appear with pointer arrows and distances as a list … kinda fun watching the arrows switch directions as you go (but keep your eyes on the road).
