Anyone try WhereIgo yet? – Wisconsin Geocaching Association

I love my Colorado, and since it is out of commission until I get a new battery door, (my fault not defects!) I have been playing around with the WhereIgo tutorial again.

The module that came on it is pretty simple but really fun, and I am trying to pull one together for the camp-out. The only bad thing is I can’t get on site to make a custom one, so i have to use the “open space play anywhere” style.
(OF course, while in the park I plan on taking a bunch of co-ords to set up one for the future:) )

But anyway, has anyone else messed with this or the PocketPC version? Is there any interest? Would it even be worth my while?

I would also be glad to go through the included module with anyone Friday night or whenever too! I’ve done it 3-4 times now and it’s still a HOOT!

I think this technology might eventually be adopted by tourist boards, outdoor museums, and the like to provide electronic tour guides. The problem is that, among geocachers, I’ve heard of one person so far who owns a Colorado (that would be you), and only a couple who use GPS enabled PocketPCs instead of a standard handheld. Remember, its not enough to use a PocketPC. It has to be GPS enabled. Perhaps this will change in the future as more GPS setups are usable by Wherigo, but until then, I’m afraid its going to be looked at as a novelty only.

Whereigo doesn’t interest me, which should be a surprise since I’m a tech lovin’ guy.

When it comes to caching though, simplicity is what I’m looking for. You’ll never see me with printouts or a PDA.

I’m in caching for where I go, not Whereigo.

To each his own though. Maybe someday after I’ve found every cache there is to be found, you’ll see me sporting a Colorado. Of course by then, they’ll have GPS implants. 😆

Unfortunately, I bought a new GPSr last year, so I don’t see myself buying a new one that can support Whereigo caches for many years.

I wouldn’t mind tagging along with someone who owns a Colorado so I can try finding one, but unless Garmin comes out with a firmware update for the 60CSx to add that ability in, I don’t have any real interest in them otherwise.

Closest one to me (SE Wisconsin) looks like downtown Chicago. If I can’t do it with my eTrex Legend (ol’ Blue), looks like I will have to imagine all the fun everyone else is having 🙄

The closest to me is Chicago also…. but it is new still. I plan on making a few of them up closer to here, I was just trying to gauge interest before I spend TOO much time working on them.

ANd you CAN make “location-less” ones that use directions and speed and things instead of actual locations.

You can make a Whereigo cartridge anyway you like, but to make a Wherigo CACHE, you must have a container at the end (or at least somewhere along the route) with a log sheet and you must require use of the Wherigo cartridge to find the cache, i.e. you can’t have the cartridge and then also give normal coordinates. Of course, hacking the cartridge is trivial, so you also have to police the logs to watch for people who don’t properly follow the cartridge.
