Yeah, we’ll take a P & G when it’s there for the taking, but our preference is to hike into the wilds. We did so this morning, getting a bunch of great new caches by SnyderBear in the Black River State Forest. We’ve done all the spectacular mound climbs out there, but this morning, visiting all these flowage areas, some requiring a mile hike in, we saw more wildlife than ever, including these guys………

This time, I remembered to pull out the camera, instead of staring like we did last December in Door County at Europe Bay.

Excuse me while I go howl at the moon in joy now!

Wow that is cool. I look forward to seeing more wildlife as I cache into remote areas.

That sounds like us last fall when we were up north doing delorme pages when two black bears ran across in front of us.

I had a baby bear cub go up a tree about twenty yards in from of me and as I was driving home a very small fawn run out in front of me but rand back just as fast. It still had spots.
Two weeks ago the dogs and I found a a fawn has we headed for a cache. It was still there when we came back.

Are those coyotes or wolves? We saw one last year when we were driving up to our cabin and my husband says it was a wolf. I wasn’t so sure and thought it may have been a coyote. It looked like what you have pictured and was just walking calmly along Hwy 51. As for caching….I’ve seen a few deer which are cool no matter how many times I’ve seen them. No bear ….. yet…..

They look like wolves to me. Reminds me of a time about 6 maybe 7 years ago. A buddy of mine and his girlfrind and I were doing some grouse hunting just off of hwy 32 between Hiles and Three Lakes. We were down in a spruce swamp and as he was stepping over a rather large log, a wolf jumped up and took off from the other side. Our first thought was that it was a ‘yote, but when we saw how big the thing was, there was no mistaking it. I wish we had a camera that day. Almost nobody believes us.

Yes, these are definitely wolves. You can tell by their coloration and the fact that the ears are relatively small.

One thing the picture doesn’t really convey is the size of the wolves. As furfool says, when you see a full grown adult wolf there is no mistaking it for anything else because of its size. They are about the size of a small deer (though not as tall)… at 100+ pounds they are bigger than most dogs.

Here is a wolf identification PDF:

Furfool, we believe you… we live up that way and have a friend that lives very near where you said and she hears them howling almost every night!
Have you checked the DNR wolf pack charts? They are even recognized on that in the Three Lakes/Hiles area.

There has been no talk about the cougar in that area this year so far but there are lots of places for it to hang out and not come near humans up here.

Mrs. TE, wouldn’t that swamp furfool mentions be kind of where the snowshoe cache is located?

I didn’t have any good reference point while taking my photos, but they are definitely wolves. They were huge, our first sight had us thinking “deer running across.” Coyotes are half the size of wolves. We have seen them on highway 51, too. I don’t know if coyotes and wolve’s territories overlap much or not. Down near us, coyotes are the norm, but there are established and well-tracked wolf packs in the Black River State Forest.

According to my calculations, it was about 2.4 miles north of Esker In The Kettle (GC10MPG). Taking 32 south, there is a small off road parking area on the east side of the road shortly after passing Whitefish Lake. There is also an old hunting trail just north of this parking spot on the opposite side of the road. It was down this trail where we had come across the wolf.

Being from Milwaukee we never get to hear about any cougar sightings up that way. We will if someone knows somebody from the north. I have been going to that area for over 30 years now, and have always thought that the DNR must be nuts to say that they are not present in the state. I don’t have to tell you that once you get off and away from the roads, that it is an awful big wilderness up there. I find it too hard to rule most anything out of these areas.

There supposedly a “Big Cat” hanging around a 5 mile area around my house. There have been sighting just east of me and just down the road south of me also. There were pics published in the Wisconsin Outdoor News a few months ago a Mountain lion taken with a trail cam in the Drummond area.

Nice wolf photo! Thanks for posting that.

I believe we saw a wolf then! It was a bit bigger than our dog (yellow lab) and looked exactly like those in the photos! Thanks for everyone’s input! The wolf we saw was just north of Mercer on Hwy 51. We have a cache near here called Paradise Island…It’s on a little island on Pine Lake. If anyone is in the area it’s a great lake to paddle around on! There is a Loon that takes up residence here every year and an eagle’s nest on the south end. I can recommend some local places to eat if you’re interested! Just email me!
